Lady Patriots blank two district opponents
By BARRY BURLESON
The Marshall Academy softball team continued to steamroll its District 1-AA opponents last week.
The Lady Patriots, in the two home games, outscored DeSoto and Tunica by a combined 25-0 score. They upped their conference-leading record to 7-0.
In a 15-0 win over DeSoto Tuesday, Aug. 27, Alaken McNeer pitched the complete three-inning blowout and recorded her first perfect game of the year.
Getting multiple hits for MA were Kat Moore, Alexis McGreger, Darcie Gibson and Erin Lomenick.
Then on Thursday of last week, the Lady Pats bombed Tunica 10-0 in their last home contest of the season.
McNeer, the team’s only senior, had an outstanding performance on Senior Night. She pitched the full six-inning game, giving up only two hits and striking out one. She was also perfect from the plate, going three for three.
Moore added two hits for Marshall.
“Alaken (McNeer) had a really great Senior Night,” coach Carlton Gibson said. “We are proud of her accomplishments and we will definitely miss her next year.”
With the two wins last week, the Lady Patriots upped their overall record to 19-5-1.
They will travel to Lee (Ark.) Thursday for a district matchup and then participate in the Carroll Tournament Saturday. Next Monday, Sept. 9, they wrap up conference play with a doubleheader at West Memphis Christian.
Class A Marshall visits Class AAA rival Magnolia Heights next Tuesday, Sept. 10. Game-time is 5 p.m.
