Behind The Scoreboard
Almost time for the real NFL season
We are nearing the close of the NFL pre-season and as usual, over the years, we have urged all readers not to put too much weight (or future gold) on the standings achieved in this abbreviated season.
We have never down-played the merits of this playing stint because it becomes a real tool of assessment for coaches and players. And this is the week when teams must pare rosters down to 75 players.
Now, the teams are getting down to reality with just one game left for most of them in pre-season. There have been a handful of standouts in the games used as mettle-provers. A trio of teams has gone undefeated thus far.
Leading the race in the NFC East, the Washington Redskins are 3-0 and remember their QB, one of the top 10 pre-season picks, RGIII has been re-habbing a bum knee since January.
I have become a fan of Robert Griffin’s dedication and resilience and have decided to make the Redskins my favorite this season. I have never considered the Redskins before for this auspicious (?) honor and a big portion of that reasoning was I always bet on Tom Landry and the Cowboys whenever they met Washington in those epic games.
The New Orleans Saints, who have their regular coach back this season, play in the South and they join Seattle in the West as unbeatens. The Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota join St. Louis as the winless corps in the NFC.
The AFC had no unblemished records in the preseason but a slew of 2-1’s. Could that be a sign of parity or coaches broadening their horizons? The conference had a pair of non-winners, Pittsburgh in the North and Jacksonville in the South.
While most fans are licking their chops awaiting the start of the season, some are reluctant to divulge their predictions for their choices.
Like Rex Ryan of the New York Jets, they are electing to exercise the right to answer or not to answer.
You go, Coach Ryan.
