Marvin Dodson, 64, of Byhalia, died Aug. 21, 2014, at North Delta Hospice in Southaven. He was a self-employed truck driver.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Aug. 28 from 2-6 p.m. and at the church Aug. 29 from 12 noon to 12:55 p.m.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 29 at Pleasant Grove MB Church in Red Banks. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. S.A. Phillips will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He leaves four children, Katina Lucas of Red Banks, Sabrina DeCuire, Demico Dodson, both of Seattle, Wash., Alisha Dillard of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Pearl Dodson of Byhalia; a brother, Donald “Duck” Dodson of Byhalia; and five grandchildren.
Melinda Childress Hughes
Melinda Childress Hughes, 83, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 18, 2014, at her home. She was the widow of Nathan Hughes. She was a Jehovah’s Witness.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Providence MB Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Willie Hoey officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves a son, James E. Lawson of Holly Springs; five daughters, Sweetie Hawkins of Baltimore, Md., Bulah Hicks of Oxford, Maggie Holcomb of Aurora, Ill., Aubrey Kinard, Debra Hughes of Holly Springs; three sisters, Lucille Harris, Letha Harris, Beatrice Robinson, all of Holly Springs; two brothers, Louis Childress, George Childress, both of Waynesville, Mo.; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Nathan Hughes Jr. and Johny Hughes.
Florence B. Shipp Matlock
Florence B. Shipp Matlock, 69, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 21, 2014, at Baptist Hospital-North MS in Oxford. She was a member of Jordan’s Temple in Holly Springs, a member of the mother board, and a food service assistant with Alliance HealthCare System.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Aug. 29 from 2-6 p.m. and at the church on Aug. 30 from 10-10:55 a.m.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 30 at New Dimension Salt and Light Ministries. Burial will be in New Hope CME Church Cemetery. Bishop Earnest Jordan will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She leaves three children, Cathie Hampton of Holly Springs, Tracy Shipp of Fort Wayne, Ind., Curtis Blair Jr. of Milwaukee, Wisc.; three sisters, Bernice Rutherford, Glennie Pegues, both of Holly Springs, Connie Bradley of Southaven; a brother, Jimmy Lee Shipp Jr. of Holly Springs; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Shipp.
Janie Owens, 77, of New Albany, died Aug. 19, 2014, in New Albany. She was a Baptist.
Graveside services were held at 6 p.m. on Aug. 22 at Enterprise Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
She leaves two daughters, Ivy Bryant (Lloyd) of Bradford, Tenn., Terri Price (Larry) of Hickory Flat; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Randy Owens, Mark Owens; three daughters, Rebecca Peterson, Lisa Owens, Jackie Owens; and two grandchildren, Christopher Price, Tiffany Price.

John Huron “Duck” Shaw, 88, of Waterford, died Aug. 19, 2014, at the Trinity Mission Health and Rehab in Holly Springs. He was a United States veteran and retired logger. He received his education in the Marshall County Public School System and was a lifelong resident of North Mississippi.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 at the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Holly Springs. Burial was in Laws Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were provided Peebles Fayette County Funeral Homes and Cremation Center, Main Chapel of Somerville, Tenn.
He leaves his brother, Travis O’Dell Shaw of Holly Springs; three nephews, Monty Shaw (Norma), Jerry Shaw (Lee), Ricky Shaw, all of Holly Springs; and a niece, Karen Cupp (Jeff) of Olive Branch.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 2641 Laws Hill Road, Holly Springs, MS 38635.
Danny Ray Smith
Danny Ray Smith, 33, of Byhalia, died Aug. 17, 2014. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Barton and an equipment operator.
Services were held at 2 pm. on Aug. 21 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in First Baptist Church Cemetery in Barton.
He leaves his father, Wayne Smith of Memphis, Tenn.; his mother, Ruth Smith of Byhalia; a brother, David Smith of Byhalia; two sisters, Lisa Coleman of Byhalia, Melinda Brown of Memphis and a niece, Brittany Coleman of Byhalia.

Jonathan LeAndre’ Taylor
Jonathan LeAndre’ Taylor, 36, of Holly Springs, died Aug. 24, 2014, at Davage Smith Hall/Rust College. He was a member of Chulahoma MB Church, young adult ministry, NAACP, a 2000 graduate of Rust College and resident director of Rust College Davage Smith Hall.
Visitation will be Aug. 29 from 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home and Aug. 30 from 10-10:55 a.m. at the church.
