News BriefsSpecial election Sept. 16 for Town of Byhalia alderman A special election for alderman has been set for Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the Town of Byhalia. The mayor and board declared the vacancy due to the recent death of Terry Sawyer. The special election on September 16 will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at one voting precinct, Byhalia Town Hall, located at 161 Highway 309 South. The winner will fill the remainder of Sawyer’s term, which expires June 30, 2009. Next year is an election year for all municipal officials. Chamber, VFW helping bring Memorial Wall to city The Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce and the VFW are raffling a motor scooter with proceeds helping to bring the Veterans Memorial Wall to Holly Springs in November. Tickets, $20 each, are available from chamber board members or any VFW member. Only 500 will be sold. A poker run, Saturday, Sept. 13, at the VFW, will also raise money for the Memorial Wall. The event, which starts at 9:30 a.m., will also include a silent auction, barbecue plates and a bike show at 2 p.m. South Reporter to debut Spry magazine on Sept. 11 Spry, a new monthly health and wellness magazine dedicated to “celebrating the vitality in all of us,” will debut in The South Reporter September 11 as an insert in the newspaper. Each edition of Spry will include a broad range of timely and insightful articles about health, nutrition, fitness, and more. Features will include recipes for healthy food that your whole family will love, fun ideas for getting active, and easy-to-follow advice for dealing with everyday health issues, like getting a great night’s sleep, and easing aches and pains. Spry not only provides the tools to achieve a healthy life, but it showcases readers’ success stories to keep others inspired and motivated to live healthier and happier every day. Beginning September 11, Spry will be a regular monthly insert in The South Reporter on the second week of every month. Hummingbird celebration Sept. 5-7, Strawberry Plains It’s almost time for the annual Hummingbird Migration Celebration. It is set for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 5-7, at the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, 285 Plains Road, Holly Springs, just off Highway 311. The celebration features the spectacular fall migration of the ruby-throated hummingbird. Thousands of the tiny birds are drawn to the center’s forests, gardens and feeders.
