| Activities on tap for Kudzu Festival Plans are set for the 20th annual Kudzu Festival on the square in Holly Springs, October 22 through October 25. The many aspects of the festival are aimed at providing something for everyone, so make plans to attend and enjoy the festivities. PBJ Happee Day Shows will provide rides, carnival games with prizes, and your favorite fair concessions. School day is Wednesday, with wristbands priced at $7 for unlimited rides. Wristbands will be priced at $12 for everyone the remainder of the festival. Individual tickets for one-time rides will also be available. Hours of operation will be 5 p.m. until midnight Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. until midnight on Saturday. Local crafts people are invited and encouraged to show off their talents in Holly Springs at the arts and crafts festival on Saturday, along with arts and crafts vendors from seven other states. Don’t miss this opportunity to display and sell your work on the square. Booth rental is only $25, or $35 if electricity is needed. Contact the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce at 252-2943 to reserve your space. For those who enjoy cooking, there will also be a Kansas City Barbecue sanctioned barbecue competition on Saturday. The cook-off is most enjoyable when our local citizens participate in the event, and the chamber is looking forward to a large turnout from our local master grillers, bakers and sweet tea makers this year. Match your skills against teams from all over the Mid-South who bring their grills and secret recipes to vie for the Mississippi State Championship in categories including whole hog, shoulder, ribs and anything but. For added interest this year, the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce will locally sponsor a sweet tea challenge and a dessert competition. Contact the chamber for an application to participate in this event. Athletes can participate in the 5K run on Saturday morning, sponsored by American Pacific Paneling/Design the Space. The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the square and take a challenging course around our beautiful city, winding back to the square for the finish line. Applications are available online at www.americanpac.com. If you are concerned about gas prices and commuting, maybe a 2008 Peace Sports scooter with a 150 cc, 4-stroke engine that is highway approved with a maximum speed of 75 miles per hour and averaging 90 miles per gallon would interest you. Raffle tickets for $20 each are on sale now at the chamber office at 104 E. Gholson Ave. and will be on sale throughout the Kudzu Festival. The lucky winner will be drawn at 10 p.m. on Saturday night at the Kudzu Festival center stage. The chamber has an exciting entertainment lineup this year with local celebrities. Holly Springs’ own John and Tatum from Bliss will be on stage at 7 p.m. on Thursday, followed by our up-and-coming hometown band, “Ordinary Citizens” on Friday night at 7 p.m. Just off a six-week summer stint at Coyote Ugly on Beale Street, the Etta band of Braden Gray and Loose Gravel will take center stage on Saturday. This band is gaining notoriety with country fans, having opened for acts such as Emerson Drive and booking a full calendar of show dates in cities all over the Mid-South. The annual Kudzu Festival is an opportunity for our folks to get involved in their community. No matter your area of interest, there is something for you to enjoy, and the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce is proud to sponsor this event. |
