MA offense in
Marshall Academy scored five touchdowns in a two-quarter jamboree Saturday night – a sampling of the Patriots’ firepower this season.
Quarterback Dakota Dailey ran for three of the scores and passed for another as MA beat Falkner 33-21 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on the Ole Miss campus. It was the final matchup of the 10-game Oxford Jamboree over the weekend.
“Offensively, we are way ahead of where we were this time last year,” coach Bart Jenkins said.
New assistant coach Sam Pearson is running the offense.
“His system fits our personnel,” Jenkins said. “We are a lot more balanced. We’re looking very good offensively, and we only have a quarter of our system in place. I was pleased with our offensive line play.”
Dailey’s 68-yard run moved the Pats to the Eagles’ 1 on MA’s second possession of the jamboree. Devin McGreger scored the six.
Dailey then had a 32-yard touchdown keeper, followed by a 52-yard scoring toss to Christian Compton, and then 18- and 40-yard touchdown runs.
Marshall had two touchdowns called back due to flags. The Pats were plagued by penalties, including six of the 15-yard variety.
“We made some bonehead mistakes (penalties) that put our team in bad positions,” Jenkins said.
Defensively, MA is playing with new personnel, for the most part, in 2013.
“We missed some tackles and blew some assignments Saturday night,” Jenkins said, “but we were putting ourselves in positions to make plays.
“I think down the road, and I’m not sure how long it will take, we will be pretty good on defense, too. It’s a process.”
He said there had not been as much work on defense in practice because “we had to get the new offensive system in and the offensive personnel right.”
MA, moving down to Class A this season after a state runner-up finish in Class AA last year, opens a new season Friday versus long-time rival Kirk, still in Class AA.
“They have a new coaching staff and a good player at quarterback,” Jenkins said. “They will have a good game plan for us.”
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in Grenada.
