• Group expected to appeal decision to supervisors By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Planning Commission said no Thursday to a group who wants to put a transitional home for former inmates near a subdivision. A large group of residents living in the area voiced opposition to the move at the meeting. Police probe stabbing incident A stabbing incident under investigation by the Holly Springs Police Department found three men being treated at Alliance Healthcare System, according to chief Robert Pearson. The investigation began after officers responded to a call from the hospital Saturday, Aug. 16. They learned that 25-year-old Cortez Cowan, of Holly Springs, was being treated for three stab wounds, one on the arm and two on the right side of his body, Pearson said. AT&T asks to offer video to Holly Springs By SUE WATSON Gunner Goad, area manager for AT&T of North Mississippi, visited the Holly Springs Board of Aldermen August 4 to request that his company be allowed to deliver video service over the phone wires.
St. Mary, CADET, Holy Family celebrate 60th anniversary and seventh school reunion Holy Family school will host an assembly on Friday, August 29, at 1 p.m., to kick off the school’s 60th anniversary celebration. Students, teachers, alumni and friends will assemble to hear a PowerPoint presentation on the schools’ history. The St. Mary, CADET, and Holy Family alumni will continue the celebrating at 7 p.m. with a meet-and-greet fish fry at Annie’s Restaurant. Reunion celebration activities will continue over the weekend. The alumni hosts a reunion here every three years. This year marks the seventh reunion. Congressman comes to county Congressman Travis Childers visited rural health care centers throughout Mississippi’s First Congressional District last week as part of National Health Care Week.
The Congressman’s visits included tours of facilities in Marshall, Benton, Itawamba and Monroe counties. County hears budget requests By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Board of Supervisors held a budget meeting July 28 to discuss requests, but since the county assessed valuation was not yet available from the tax assessor’s office, the board postponed action on a number of items on the agenda. Deadline August 22 for Hummingbird Art Contest A Hummingbird Art Contest is being sponsored by Strawberry Plains Center and the Marshall County Library. Contest is open to all children ages 6 to 15. Prizes will be awarded in three age categories: 6 - 8, 9 - 11, and 12 - 15 year olds.
More people putting up fresh produce By SUE WATSON It can’t be said it’s a back to earth movement, yet, but more people are hedging their bets on the economy this year by freezing and canning produce. Seed sales were on the rise nationally this year as more people planted gardens, according to Mayo Seed Company and Burpee & Company. Byhalia police respond to variety of calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 28 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – five alarm calls, three motor vehicle accidents, one disturbance, one domestic call, one theft, two escorts, four assists, one medical assistance, one fire, eight miscellaneous calls and one report of damaged property. Byhalia police officers also made eight arrests on the following charges:
Annual Kudzu Festival Oct. 22-25 in downtown Holly Springs Plans are shaping up for the 20th Annual Kudzu Festival on the square in Holly Springs October 22 through October 25.
