Close to Nowhere
Really scary stuff
• December this year is going to be unusual. There are postings everywhere on Facebook about this phenomenon.
Seems like this December will have five Mondays (how horrible!), five Saturdays and five Sundays. And this happens only once every 823 years.
According to most of the posts going around, you have to share this tidbit, based on Chinese feng shui. If you do, you’ll get lots of money. If you don’t, you won’t. I haven’t shared or reposted on Facebook, so I guess I won’t get rich anytime soon.
That’s not what’s scary though!
My neighbor Carolyn King, who also works at the newspaper, bought her first Christmas item this past weekend — a fiber optic angel.
She will finish every bit of her Christmas shopping in September. We’ve been neighbors as well as co-workers since 1986 and every September she finished her Christmas shopping.
Most years, I don’t start shopping until after Thanksgiving and finish two hours before Christmas the next year.
The really scary part — there are only 138 days left until Christmas!
• I finally finished youngest granddaughter Remy’s cat quilt.
I’m pretty sure I started it sometime in 2008 because the cat block in the center memorializes Killer and Pepper, mother and son. Killer died in 2008 and Pepper in 2009. Both were solid black cats and Remy loved them dearly. (She loves all her cats dearly though.)
Killer came from the late Dottie Chumney at Boots ’N Spurs in Red Banks. Daughter Dana and granddaughter Remy were there one day and Dottie was telling Dana about all these wild kittens she had.
It wasn’t long before Remy came trotting up with one of the uncatchable kittens clutched to her chest and the kitty was purring away. I’ve never seen an animal that didn’t immediately like Remy. Her late Uncle Paul was like that also.
Killer came home to live with Remy and had a couple of litters of kittens. Pepper came from the litter that was named after food — Sugar (whom we still have), Pepper and I seem to have forgotten the rest, although both girls could tell me immediately.
But back to the quilt. The pattern is called Calico Cats and there are 36 cat silhouettes. Remy’s quilt has 36 cats made out of 1930s fabrics. Thirty-six of the same block is very boring!
It’s finally finished though. Now I only have about 36 more unfinished quilts to go!
