Close to Nowhere
It’s so bad you just have to laugh
I read a short story by Stephen King a while back that probably could have been written about my life.
Seems most people have gremlins or fairies or whatever that take care of them. Some are better than others at their jobs. This one guy’s gremlin was one of the not-so-good-at-his-job gremlins. But, he was better than nothing.
If our guy stepped off a curb, he might fall and break his leg, but he wouldn’t get hit by a car. Things like that.
That’s my life. Always has been. Murphy’s Law is my motto: “If it can go wrong, it will.”
My oldest granddaughter has coveted my little red car for a while now. I guess since she got her driver’s license.
I bought my little red car on my 50th birthday -- 11 years ago. I love that car. A Toyota Matrix, it has 280,000+ miles on it and drives like a top. Minor repairs occasionally, but on the whole, a very dependable, gas-saving (35 mpg) and enjoyable car.
Meredith is a senior this year and I thought about buying her a car. Then I decided, no, I’d buy me a car and give her my beloved little red car.
Monday afternoon I left work early and we drove to Covington Pike in Memphis, Tenn. I’d been looking on the Internet for a while and I knew what kind of car I wanted and what they were all priced. In fact, I’d been looking so long that Pop had looked on the computer with me. He thought I needed a new car worse than I did.
I knew I wanted a “grandmother” van. At 50, I sold my then grandmother van and bought the little red sporty car.
This year, I’m giving my granddaughter my beloved little red car and I bought another “grandmother” van.
Turns out Volkswagen makes a grandmother van.
The Volkswagen Routan SEL looks like most other vans. My particular one is black, not red and being a Volkswagen all the “stuff” is in different places.
It’s very comfortable and drives wonderfully well, although being a six cylinder I’m kinda worried about gas mileage.
On the way there, I discovered that I’d left my purse at work. But that was OK with the saleslady -- she sent me home in the new car with a promise I’d pay her Tuesday.
Pulled into my carport and rolled my window down to talk to my brother.
The driver’s side window regulator went bonkers and now, I can’t roll my window up.
The dealer was great, the window will be fixed by them and all will eventually be well.
My gremlin let me fall off the curb, but I didn’t get hit by a car!
