| Water system expansion in works By SUE WATSON The Holly Springs Board of Aldermen held public hearings on two water projects that will provide potable drinking water to the communities of Marianna, Red Banks and Victoria. The two projects, estimated to cost over $5.5 million, include the construction of a 300,000-gallon water tank and treatment plant, a 1,000 gallon per minute well and a distribution line beside Holly Springs’ new north bypass road. About 18.2 miles of water line will extend from the system to Marianna, South Red Banks Road, Chulahoma Road and side roads. In addition, the system will back up the Holly Springs water supply, according to Don Hollingsworth, public works director. The tank and well are estimated to cost $2.5 million to build, while the water lines and meters are estimated to cost $3.1 million to install.
Police officer indicted Michael Wilson, a four-year officer with the Holly Springs Police Department, was indicted by the Marshall County grand jury July 15 for the sale of hydrocodone, a controlled substance, to an undercover officer, according to chief Robert Pearson. “Wilson was arrested and taken into custody by members of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday, July 21, at the Holly Springs police station,” Pearson said. “Wilson was immediately relieved of duty and suspended without pay, pending adjudication of the charge in the Marshall County Circuit Court.” After being arrested, Wilson was released on bond pending his appearance in the Marshall County Circuit Court on August 6, Pearson said. ‘Cowboy’ befriends cowboy Bolden By SUE WATSON Several years ago Jerry Bolden was looking for a red heeler to help him with his cow herd. He was interested in adopting one. “I had talked to the Humane Society and told them if they found a red heeler to call me,” he said. When Bolden got his call to come look at the red heeler they had in the shelter he went out to look at the 8-month-old dog with a narrow head. He is used to the wide headed variety of red heelers. This one looks like the ones raised in southeast Oklahoma, he said. Tourism receives grant for murals The Holly Springs Tourism and Recreation Bureau has been awarded a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission (MAC). This grant is a portion of the $1.5 million in grants the commission will award in 2009-10 and will be used to help fund the downtown Holly Springs mural project. The grants are made possible by continued funding from the Mississippi State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Deputies make arrest in stabbing By SUE WATSON Marshall County deputies arrested Jonah Monroe Taylor, 27, of 271 Lane Road in Potts Camp, on July 26, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. He was charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Dickerson said. Amanda Taylor, the suspect’s wife, called 911 in the early morning hours to say she had been stabbed by her husband in their home, Dickerson said. Education, support, therapy available at senior care facility By SUE WATSON Aging can present a new set of challenges to adults and their families and friends. The challenges can be overwhelming to some families, as well as to the individual whose health status changes, and can be expressed emotionally, mentally and behaviorally, according to Judith R. Owens, director of the Senior Care Unit at Alliance HealthCare System in Holly Springs.
