| Community prayer group forms By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
community prayer group that focuses on building harmony among residents
of the Holly Springs and Marshall County area has been formed. Last
Saturday’s prayer meeting drew 11 participants and three ministers,
according to Rev. Bruce McMillan. The group will meet again this
Saturday at 10 a.m. at the fellowship hall at Christ Episcopal Church. McMillan said the first session lasted about an hour and a half. “The
energy that flowed was immense,” McMillan said of the first prayer
meeting. “We all knew more wanted to come, but couldn’t this time.” At this Saturday’s meeting the group will try to find another time or day to meet, he said. “In any case, it was a very moving and productive gathering and everyone seemed anxious to keep this thing alive,” he said. The
prayer group was conceived at two previous meetings of a group of men
who were seeking to find ways to bring about racial harmony in the
community. A local politician, two ministers, and other interested
citizens decided on the prayer group as a way to begin constructive
dialogue and activities that would include anyone interested in
improving the spiritual environment in the city. Although
specific topics may not be discussed, individuals can gather to pray
about problems of the community. The group is non-denominational in
focus. At the first prayer meeting, Rev. Willie Jeffries of Strawberry Church and Rev. Milton Winter met with the group. All are invited to attend this Saturday’s prayer meeting. “The Spirit is moving and we’re very glad and thankful,” McMillan said. The prayer group included some discussions, according to Winter. “The
focus is prayer, but we are doing some discussing,” he said. “We talked
about things important to us. I thought it was very productive and that
I got to know the participants better. I just think it's so important
for people in the community to know each other better.” The
prayer group is organized and supported by members of both black and
white churches. Christ Episcopal Church fellowship hall is located on
the corner of Van Dorn Ave. and Randolph Street. Parking is available on Randolph Street or in the First Baptist Church parking lot across from Piggly Wiggly. For more information, contact McMillan at 252-6172 or your local minister.
