A Memphis, Tenn., man was a victim of a drive-by shooting on Highway 78 last week, according to chief William Hollowell. Lee
Brantley, 38, was driving back to Memphis after a day’s work in Oxford,
when a vehicle pulled alongside his car and someone shot several times,
one bullet striking the victim, Hollowell said. There were at least
five bullet holes in the car, he said. “Residents
living on Strickland Drive, near the highway, called about 7:15 p.m.
Monday, January 7, and reported hearing several gunshots toward Highway
78,” he said. “The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the
City of Holly Springs.” About 15 minutes later, 911 received a call from the victim that he needed help at the Exxon station in Byhalia. Brantley
told authorities he was driving west on Highway 78, headed home from
work in Oxford, when a dark-colored black or gray SUV pulled alongside
his vehicle. The person in the front passenger seat pulled out a gun
and shot several rounds into his car with a handgun. | Photo by Sue Watson

Hollowell
said he does not know if the case is a drive-by shooting, a case of
road rage, or if it was a targeted shooting. Brantley was hit by a
bullet that appeared to have entered the driver’s side door near the
glass and struck his left shoulder, the chief said. “He knew he was shot and continued to drive another 12 miles,” the chief said. “The SUV passed on by and sped off.” Brantley was transported to The Med by ambulance, treated and released two days later. “He
is very lucky to be alive,” said Hollowell. “Whoever did the shooting
was a pretty good shot and hit the car in several places.” Six shots appeared to have been fired, he said. Holly
Springs police are asking anyone with any knowledge about the shooting
to call the police department at 662-252-2122 or Crime Stoppers at
800-729-2169. All tips are kept strictly in confidence and callers do
not have to give their name.
