The Potts Camp Cardinals started
the season’s second half the
same way they finished the first –
winning. Coach Brian Smith’s team won
their sixth and seventh straight
games last week – 60-56 over
Lafayette and 66-57 over
Strayhorn. They improved their
record to 12-10. “Things are going good,” he
said. “We’re flying high right now.”
The Lady Cardinals knocked
off Lafayette and Strayhorn, too, to
up their season mark 13-7. Potts Camp boys The second quarter was the difference
Tuesday, Jan. 6, at home.
Class 1A Potts Camp outscored
Class 4A Lafayette 12-2 in that period
and went on to win by four. “It was a big win,” Smith said.
“We played very well in the second
quarter and let up some in the
fourth. We let them back in it. Free
throws down the stretch put the
game away.” Johnathan Falkner had 21
points, six steals and four assists to
lead the Cards. Lavonte Richmond
contributed 18 points and eight
rebounds. Jeremy Siggers had 10
points and 11 rebounds. “It was a good game for us to
play – playing up in classification a
few notches,” Coach Smith said.
“It will get us ready for district.” Richmond scorched the nets
for 28 points and had 11 rebounds
Friday night as the Cardinals
invaded Strayhorn and departed with the nine-point victory. “Lavonte had a big night,” Coach
Smith said. He said he will likely be listed as
a top performer by The Clarion-
Ledger this week with 46 points
and 19 rebounds in two games last
week. Also hitting in double digits
were Falkner with 19 and LaDarius
Beard with 10. Falkner added five
steals and four assists. Siggers had
eight rebounds and four steals and
“pretty much shut down their best
player in the fourth,” Smith said.
Terry Crane handed out six assists,
which the coach said is unusual for
a big man but he “found Lavonte a
lot under the basket.” Crane also
had seven rebounds. The Potts Camp boys (2-0 in the
district) trailed 15-13 at the end of
the first quarter. But they turned
things around in the second period
- outscoring the home team 28-10
and taking a commanding 41-25
halftime lead. Lady Cardinals | Photo by Ronnie Day | Two of 28
Potts Camp’s Queen Dean (23) scores two of her 28 points versus Lafayette. |
Coach Tana Miller’s team
enjoyed an offensive outburst to
open the post-holiday portion of
their schedule. They downed
Lafayette 80-76. “We’re excited about the victory
over a 4A school,” she said. “One of
our goals was putting more points
on the board, and we did that. But I
was not as pleased with allowing 76.
But as long as you’re on top, that’s
OK.” She said Queen Dean really
“stepped up” her game. She scored
28 points to spark the offense.
Kenyotta Jenkins added 22. “All the girls played well,” Miller
said. “We moved the ball well. It
was a good start to the second half
of the season.” The Potts Camp girls were up
41-37 at the half. “Lafayette is very athletic and
ran the floor well,” she said. “We
had a hard time getting back on
defense, but we were able to pull it
off.” Strayhorn kept it close for a
quarter Friday night, but the Lady
Cardinals used a 20-6 run in the second
period and went on to dominate
the home team 70-34. Potts Camp (2-0 in the district)
used a balanced offensive attack.
Jenkins was the top gun with 19,
while Dean, Lamonica Ingram and
Nieshia Stinson tossed in 11 each.
