| H.W. Byers sweeps New Site • Lions survive Royals’ stall tactics, win 12-11 By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The
Byers teams were back defending their turf on Friday evening. This time
they were hosting regional rivals, the New Site Royals. The Lady
Lions had advanced their record to 18-0 on Tuesday and now faced the
Lady Royals, whose record was 16-3. They also had a pair of players,
Krystal Jackson and Emily Brasel, who were running with their Byers’
counterparts. The Lady Lions managed to go out 11-8 in the first. The
Lady Royals persisted in their attack in the second. They took their
first lead of the game when Carleigh King stuck a trey to put them up
16-15. They were able to bury a pair of deuces and left Byers behind at
the half at 20-18. The Lady Lions had slipped into a slump
during the early part of the second. Their sporadic, and at times
erratic play, caused their fans some anxious moments. Their errors were
beginning to multiply. It looked worse in the third. The Lady
Lions were experiencing a low shot percentage. Their close-in misses
were allowing the Lady Royals to hustle for the rebounds and remain
close. Additionally, the poor rebounding was resulting in too many
second opportunities for the visitors. New Site had kept the lead all
during the third quarter until Rachel Jones put the Lady Lions ahead by
three with two consecutive trips to the charity stripe. But the Lady
Royals cut that back to one at 32-31 at the end of three. The
Byers girls achieved their largest margin of eight early in the fourth
quarter. They maintained a lead the rest of the way but they were still
misfiring badly. They won out 45-41. It drove their record to a perfect
19 with a 2-0 region mark. Simone Gorman had a double-double, 18
points and 16 rebounds. Amanda Jones had 11 points; Kourtney Coleman
had eight; and Rachel Jones had seven. Darrah Pharr led the visitors with 16. Their record went to 16-4, 0-2 in region. Lions win strange game The
Royals players and coaching staff were probably the only persons in the
“Lions’ Den” who were not confused, perplexed or just plain disgusted
with the second game of the evening. The Royals came out in a
2-3 format after claiming the ball at the tip and held it motionless in
the back court. The Lions formed a 2-3 defense and only shifted when
the Royals decided to move the ball, which wasn’t very often. The
first quarter ended 0-0 after the Royals tried to move the ball in for
a shot but lost the handle. Such a score might have been interesting if this had been a championship football game. The
halftime score was 2-0. The Royals held the ball again and tried to
score in the last 20 seconds of the second quarter, but turned the ball
over and Demarius Scott scored. After intermission, the Royals
set up in the same formation. This time the Lions countered with a 3-2.
Midway through the third the Royals started movement. However, they
were not looking for a shot, they were playing “keep-away.” Then Byers,
which already had two points, ran off a quick five to make it 7-0 at
the end of three. The Royals really came alive in the fourth and
scored 11 points to Byers’ five. The game ended with the Lions taking
the one-point victory at 12-11. Tedarian Bryson had eight Byers points. Jonathan Smith had six for the Royals. The Lions improved to 7-10 overall, 2-0 in district. Sports Editor’s Note:
This has to be another classic case for the initiation of a shot clock
in secondary basketball. No matter which way it is looked at, this is a
disaster waiting to happen.
