Car tag issue takes good turn By SUE WATSON A combination of Legislative Tag Credit and the lower millage rate set by supervisors last fall for this fiscal year has worked to keep Marshall County vehicle owners in pretty good shape when renewing their registration stickers or buying a new tag. New board moves on projects By SUE WATSON Three newly-elected aldermen took their seats Tuesday night, July 7, amidst repeated light humor coming from returning Holly Springs aldermen Russell Johnson and Garrie Colhoun and Mayor Andre’ DeBerry, starting a third term.
Fun for entire family at Kudzu By SUE WATSON Holly Springs and Marshall County are set for lots of home-style and family-style fun this week with the arrival of the 21st Annual Kudzu Festival downtown. The festival this year has something for all ages and interests and is a family-oriented event. Beer will be limited to an enclosed tent set aside for those 21 and older. Musical entertainment and a sponsor-appreciation dinner will be under the tent at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Police investigate burglaries Holly Springs police investigated two business burglaries, one residential burglary and one attempted burglary last week, according to chief Robert Pearson. A business in the 300 block of Van Dorn was burglarized after a south window was broken out, he said. The owner arrived at the business around 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, to find the window broken and 300 clients’ tax information, two cream-colored filing cabinets and a Dell computer and one Dell Notebook computer taken.
Karon’s fan club met online By SUE WATSON Fifty or more fans of fiction writer Jan Karon’s Mitford Series, “Home to Holly Springs,” and other books came home to Holly Springs from places all over the United States last week to see the small Southern town that is the setting of her book and to meet and greet locals. Cayce getting funds for new fire truck Congressman Travis Childers has announced $820,718 in essential community facilities projects in Mississippi’s First Congressional District. These projects, including one in Marshall County and another in Benton County, are being funded immediately with federal funds provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Newspaper wins seven awards The South Reporter won seven awards in the Mississippi Press Association’s 2008 Better Newspaper Contest, highlighted by the prestigious Photo of the Year. Russell Johnson’s picture of a 9-month-old baby being found alive 15 hours after a house explosion on Cuba Street was judged the best photo last year from all newspapers in the state – weekly and daily. Byhalia police go to 38 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 38 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 4; motor vehicle accidents, 5; escorts, 2; animal-related call, 1; juvenile-related call, 1; medical assistance, 4; fires, 2; miscellaneous, 19. Byhalia police also made four arrests during the past week. |
