| Colonsay cabin saved by new owners and moved to Burton Place By SUE WATSON
A cabin added onto Colonsay Cottage in the 1950s was dismantled and taken to Burton Place, where it will be reassembled by David Person of Holly Springs. Colonsay Cottage owner Tom Phillips said the log cabin was removed because it was not original to the house, thought to have been built during the 1830s or 1840s. The cabin addition was discovered when workers removed interior walls. Person was interested in the cabin because it once stood on one of his relatives’ place, Phillips said. “We didn’t want this to be demolished and go away,” said Phillips’ wife Lisa. Delighted to be coming to live in one of the most unusual antebellum homes in Holly Springs, she added, “We bought this lifestyle as well as the house.” Lisa Phillips is from Nashville and has lived in Memphis for the last 20 years. “We are self-proclaimed ‘Tennissippians,’ now,” she said. “We love this house and think it is going to be a wonderful home.” This is the Phillips’ first experience at restoring an old home. Correction: An error in a story about the Phillipses that ran recently in The South Reporter needs correcting. Only one Rather Drug Store bottle was found at Colonsay Cottage by Tom Phillips during excavations in the back yard. |
