The
Holly Springs Summer Youth Sports Program ended activities on Thursday,
July 3. The program had been instituted to provide activities for city
youth because Rust College had lost its funding. The college had
operated the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) for many years.
Holly
Springs Mayor Andre’ DeBerry was on hand to address the participants
and parents and staff with a motivational message. The mayor said the
initial program had begun with a small group of attendees but is
expected to grow in the coming years. He went on to charge the youth to
continue to engage in productive pursuits for the remainder of their
summer vacation. The program had offered such activities as volleyball, basketball, dance, and other subjects including nutrition. Coach
Henry Hood, who served as project liaison, identified and thanked the
sponsors and contributors whose aid had an important impact on the
program. Sponsors and contributors were: Bank of Holly Springs,
Merchants & Farmers Bank (David Cooper), Piggly Wiggly (Levi
McFadden), Carlisle’s Big Star, Wal-Mart (Sherida Jeffries), Nail
Gallery (Jackie Malone), Mr. Chic’s Style Salon, McDonald’s (Catina
Daugherty), Pizza Hut (Catherine Bridges), Lewis Auto Sales (Steve
Lewis). Laura Boxx was the nutritionist and Calvin James was the computer specialist. The
staff presented three lucky campers brand new bicycles via a random
drawing. Winners were Ryan Seldon, Star Walton and Jonathan Green. The
staff also selected an outstanding camper, Janequa Collins, who was
presented with a plaque and a brand new bike. Youth
attending this inaugural program were Dana Jeffries, Jalissa Mitchell,
Jocelyn Green, JaKayla Johnson, Daranice Holloway, William Payne, Star
Walton, Khari Isom, Splynid Hollis, Jonathan Green, Ryan Seldon,
Chauncy Seldon, LaKendra Bell, Trevian Pegues, Javius Nabors, Jasmin
Jones, Erika Jones, Jailon Jones, Justin Jones, Jocelyn Mayfield,
Jonathan Walters, Marcus Hicks, Lanequa Collins, Allison Collins,
Lanchai Collins, Tony Johnson, Shatera Cunningham and Courtney Bean. Supervisors
of the program were Kenneth McMullen, Henry Hood, Rev. James Green,
Maxine Tucker, Jeffrey Williams, Valensia Sims and Jessica Nabors.
