Suspects ID’d in Victoria shooting
By SUE WATSON
A shooting of four individuals with birdshot in the area of Watkins Grocery and Deli in Victoria Sunday night has netted three suspects, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson.
He said a call about 10 p.m., July 7, drew investigators to the scene.
First to arrive was investigator Michael Garner, who discovered there had been four people who sustained multiple peppering with birdshot fragments.
Garner called for assistance while interviewing witnesses. Three individuals were identified as suspects, plus witnesses described the suspects’ vehicle.
The investigation led to the spotting of the vehicle traveling westbound on French Road in the Byhalia area. It was pulled into a residence in the 600 block of French Road, Dickerson said.
As subjects were exiting the vehicle, one of the them fired multiple shots at the investigator’s SUV, the sheriff said. Other officers arrived at the area and searched for the shotgun and shells. During the ground search, investigators found a black shotgun in a wooded area close to the residence and several spent shells that had been fired. No individuals were taken into custody as they had fled the scene.
Further investigation and statements from witnesses made possible the issuance of warrants for the arrest of three individuals on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, Dickerson said.
Warrants were issued for Orlando Cortez Mims, 27, of the Highway 309 North area, James Antuwan Anderson, 28, of the 600 block of Bennett Circle in Byhalia, and Andrew Dion Mims, 26, of the Stonewall Road area in Byhalia, the sheriff said.
Orlando Mims turned himself in at the sheriff’s department July 8 and James Anderson turned himself in Tuesday morning of this week, the sheriff said.
Dickerson is asking anyone in the community who knows the whereabouts of Andrew Mims to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-927-2169 or to call investigations at the sheriff’s office at 662-252-1311. A substantial reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Anderson and to the conviction of individuals responsible for the incident.
Dickerson said Orlando Mims and James Anderson were expected to appear before a justice court judge Tuesday on the charges.
