| Fifteen-year-old in custody in shooting of Byhalia youth By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
suspect in the killing of a Byhalia teenager Tuesday has been taken
into custody, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson and police chief
Gary Looney. Looney requested assistance from the
Marshall County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation.
Fifteen-year-old Remill Cortez Mason, age 15, of 50 White Oak, Byhalia,
is in custody at Marshall County jail and being held for the Byhalia
Police Department, Dickerson said. Mason is a
suspect in the killing of 17-year-old Terrell Richmond, found dead at
his home in Byhalia yesterday afternoon, Dickerson said. Mason will be treated as an adult case, he said. A 16-year-old juvenile is in detention at the Corinth Juvenile Detention Center, Dickerson said. “He
was alleged to have been present at the time of the shooting and we
have good reason to believe and do believe the 16-year-old had
knowledge that the shooting was about to occur,” the sheriff said. “We
do anticipate he, too, will be charged with the murder of Terrell
Richmond.” Due to the nature of the crime, under
Mississippi law without further court proceedings, Mason will be
handled as any adult would be if they had committed the same type
crime, Dickerson said. “Any person 13 years of
age or older who commits a crime that, if committed by an adult and
upon conviction carries a possible life sentence or more, is treated as
an adult within the court system with the circuit court having original
jurisdiction,” he said. “I would anticipate,
due to the nature of the crime, Mason will have an initial appearance
and go through a bond hearing within the next 24 hours before Byhalia
town judge Jim McGarrah.” A 9 mm handgun was
recovered behind a residence in the Byhalia area and is believed by
authorities to be the weapon used in the shooting, Dickerson said. Looney,
his investigators and deputies with Marshall County worked tirelessly
until about 3 a.m. Wednesday doing a thorough crime scene investigation
and finalizing the facts of the case, Dickerson said. The
end results with Byhalia and Marshall County officers working together
had a positive impact in solving this case overnight, he said. Looney expressed appreciation for the cooperation of agencies in the investigation. “The
Byhalia Police Department offers its thanks to sheriff Kenny Dickerson
and his team of detectives and deputies for the assistance given to our
department in the investigation of the death of Terrell Richmond,”
Looney said. “The teamwork between the Byhalia Police Department, the
Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Mississippi Bureau of
Investigation allowed us to accomplish a quick apprehension of the
suspects.” Marshall County investigator Kelly
McMillen, deputy Bob Dickerson and other Marshall County officers
assisted in the investigation. For more information and updates, see next week’s print edition of The South Reporter.
