Fishing rodeo June 21 at Sardis Lake The 2008 Sardis Lake Youth Fishing Rodeo will be held on June 21 at the Sardis Lower Lake-Cypress Point Area. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. and the rodeo will start at 7:30 a.m. Age classes are 1-5 years old, 6-10 years old, and 11-15 years old. After enduring a logistical nightmare and finally arriving at the correct venue, the Warriors fought hard but fell to the Hardhats on the road. The game was changed from Holly Springs to the campus of LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tenn. The Hardhats improved to 2-1, as Cartersville is 0-2. The Tornadoes took advantage of a road weary Warriors squad. The Warriors dropped to 0-3, while Memphis moved to 2-1. The Warriors, who have played all three games on the road to start the season, finally played at home for the first time this past Friday and Saturday. Campbell, Sanders All-MPSA The Mississippi Private School Association has recognized two Marshall Academy Patriots for their performances on the baseball diamond in 2008. Shane Campbell was named to the All-MPSA first team, while Tyler Sanders was selected to the second team. Both graduated from MA in May and helped lead the Patriots to the state championship series in Class AA. Owens, Rayford, Ryan play in all-star games Three recent graduates of H.W. Byers High School turned in solid showings in the Robertson’s Sportswear/NEMBCA All-Star Basketball Games Saturday at Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Justin Owens and Marvin Rayford joined forces one last time to help lead the East to an 81-76 win in the 1A/2A boys game. Owens had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Rayford scored eight points and picked up a key steal in the closing seconds. For his all-star efforts, Owens was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player in the contest. In the 1A/2A girls all-star game, Simone Ryan scored eight points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had three blocks. She played for the West, which lost 66-47. “All three played well and contributed greatly,” said coach Jason Thompson of H.W. Byers. Marian Parker of Byers was invited to participate but she had wrist surgery on Wednesday of last week, Thompson said. American Forces Network to feature Southern Heritage Classic Beginning this year, the Southern Heritage Classic football game presented by FedEx will air on the American Forces Network® (AFN). Football, cheer camps planned The Mt. Pleasant Lions Youth Football and Cheer Organization will host a football and cheer camp. It will be held at the H. W. Byers Attendance Center on Friday, June 27, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, June 28, from 7:30 a.m. until 12 noon. All students, both boys and girls from the ages of 5-18, are encouraged and welcome to participate in this camp. The registration fee is $35 per child and is non-refundable. The requirements include a camp application, copy of certified birth certificate, copy of last report card and a sports physical report.
