Plans proceed for Byers sportsplex
By BARRY BURLESON
Plans are in place for a new H.W. Byers sportsplex, and about half of the property has already been cleared.
The 71 acres, purchased by the Marshall County School District, is on Boswell Road in Mt. Pleasant. It can be accessed via highways 72 and 311.
“We’ve cleared half and seeded it,” said Jerry Moore, superintendent of education. “The plans are laid out.”
He said the next step will be a topography study.
“That will tell us where we have to move earth to get it all ready for playing fields,” Moore said.
The goal is to begin with the football facilities, and then move to baseball, softball, soccer and a gymnasium.
“We’d love to have football done by the fall, but it may be the following fall,” he said. “What may happen is having spring football there in 2015.
“It takes time. There are so many things you have to go through.”
He said the plans could change some after the board receives the topography study.
There’s nowhere to expand at the present H.W. Byers campus.
“Now we’re sharing a football and baseball field, and that’s a mess,” Moore said.
Plus the enrollment at the school located directly on the north side of Highway 72 continues to grow.
“Eventually we will have to be looking at building space,” he said.
The last two years, Byers has had four kindergarten classes.
“I can remember when it was two, then to three and now it’s four,” Moore said. “As we continually move forward, there will be nowhere to house those kids.”
Thirty-one of the 71 acres have not been cleared.
He also said the eventual goal is to have the entire H.W. Byers campus off Highway 72 due to heavy traffic and safety concerns.
“That’s why we didn’t buy property on 72,” Moore said.
