| Teenager sentenced to 50 years By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Two
families were in Marshall County Circuit Court Friday to hear the plea
of Remill Cortez Mason, a Byhalia teenager, in the killing of Terrell
Richmond, a high school student who was shot at his computer in June
2008. Mason entered a guilty plea on one count
manslaughter and one count kidnapping and was sentenced by Judge Robert
Elliott to a total of 50 years - 20 years on the manslaughter charge
and 30 years on the kidnapping charge. The sentences will run

County begins second meals program By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County Board of Supervisors helped celebrate the first meal
served at the new senior meals program at the Victoria Community Center. Delia
Reid and Helen Young will run the program, which provides a hot meal
for anyone 60 and over, plus games, education and fellowship Monday
through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Northeast Mississippi
Community Services is helping with the program and the transportation
for seniors. As of the first day, there were 25 seniors enrolled at

City police arrest five By BARRY BURLESON Editor Holly Springs police officers made recent arrests for robbery, assault and rape. Chief Robert Pearson said Robert Lee Smith, 34, of Holly Springs, was arrested May 18 and charged with aggravated assault. Full Story
Zoning looks at unapproved event, mining By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The Marshall County Board of Supervisors discussed several zoning issues during the May 18 board meeting. First
up was Cliff Hunt, with Standard Construction, who listened to
supervisor Keith Taylor’s concerns that sand and gravel mining on the
Bridges property at Bubba Taylor Road may be more extensive than the
board thought it approved in 2006. Hunt said his
company mines on an 85-acre site on the Nichols property and on about
280 acres of the Bridges property with permission from the Mississippi
Department of Environmental Quality. Full Story

the only doctor of pharmacy in the area, Ripley native Chad Braddock is
bringing his expert knowledge and leadership experience to our
community by joining the Tyson family. Chad graduated from Ripley High
School in 1994 and from Northeast Community College in 1996. He earned
a BS degree in pharmaceutical sciences in 1998 and a doctor of pharmacy

Meetings must focus on goals By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Members
of the 2009 Leadership Marshall Class heard from Sheila Brooks with the
Tennessee Valley Authority in May about how to make meetings work. The
module was first up on a day packed with information that included
business development, managing conflict and Main Street development. A
specialist in economic development and strategic training and
leadership education, Brooks is a graduate of 2004 Leadership
Chattanooga. The module was launched by asking class members about meetings recently attended. The purposes for the meetings varied. Full Story
Byhalia police officers respond to 21 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 21 calls during the week ending May 26. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; motor
vehicle accident, 1; disturbances, 2; domestic, 1; escorts, 1; assists,
1; medical assistance, 3; miscellaneous, 7. Byhalia police officers also made three arrests during the past week.
Volunteers needed for 2010 Census By SUE WATSON Staff Writer If
Marshall County and the state of Mississippi are to get their fair
share of federal dollars for the next 10 years, then every head needs
to be counted for the 2010 Census, said Robert Jamison, representating
