| Childers fills Congressional seat By BARRY BURLESON Editor Travis Childers got 68 percent of the vote in Marshall County and 54 percent districtwide May 13. He
was scheduled to be sworn in Tuesday in Washington, D.C., to fill the
U.S. Representative seat, 1st Congressional District, the remainder of
the year. Childers, of Booneville, defeated
Southaven’s Greg Davis in the special run-off election. The two will
meet again in the November 4 general election. The winner then will be
elected to a full two-year term, starting in 2009. Turnout
on Tuesday of last week was up substantially across the district
compared to the previous April 22 vote. In Marshall County, Childers
received 3,478 votes to Davis’ 1,605. There were also two write-in
votes. More than 27 percent of the registered
voters in the county (5,136) participated in the election. That’s
compared to just over 14 percent (2,672) back on April 22. Circuit clerk Lucy Carpenter said election day went smoothly. She was pleased with the turnout. “I was hoping for more than 5,000 (voters),” she said, “and we got it.” Childers
was the winner in 20 of the district’s 24 counties last week. He won by
nearly 8,000 votes out of the 106,000 cast. Davis’ biggest win, of
course, came in his home county of DeSoto - unofficially 14,976 to
5,015. In his home county of Prentiss, Childers totaled 5,299 to Davis’
914. The House vacancy occurred when Rep. Roger
Wicker was appointed to the U.S. Senate in December of last year to
replace Trent Lott, who retired. Childers, a
Democrat, stepped down from his elected position as Prentiss County
chancery clerk. Davis, a Republican, is mayor of Southaven.
