Supervisors ask Byhalia for spay/neuter clinic space By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Marshall County Board of Supervisors discussed a possible use of the
old ambulance building near city hall in Byhalia once a week as a
spay/neuter clinic. A portion of the building could be used by Dr. Isis Johnson and the county Humane Society, said supervisor Keith Taylor. Getting
the building ready could be inexpensive, he said, requiring the laying
of vinyl flooring and getting the utilities hooked up. The
Humane Society vacated clinic space on Highway 178 East in Holly
Springs after the building was found to be unsuitable for continued use. Supervisor George Zinn III asked why the clinic could not be set up at the Humane Society animal shelter in Holly Springs. But
supervisors were told by George Kahrs with the society that it would
cost about $53,000 to put in air conditioning, utilities and enclose
rooms for conducting surgeries and receiving cats and dogs. “Four
rooms would have to have air to keep down infection,” said Kahrs,
adding surgeries for animals require the same environmental conditions
as hospitals. Larry Hall, county administrator,
said the house in Byhalia is not in as good condition as it was when
the ambulance service once used it, but to set half the house up for
the clinic shouldn’t cost much. “The county is picking up animals for Byhalia and we are grateful Byhalia agreed,” Taylor said. Kahrs
said the clinic is open on Wednesdays and provides low-cost spay/neuter
services and health screenings because the clinic is operated by
volunteers except for a modest salary for Dr. Johnson of Tupelo. Grants also help defray costs for the services, he said. Taylor motioned to prepare the house to be used as a clinic and the board unanimously voted in favor of the move.
