Pages from the Past 10 Years Ago - May 14, 1998 Craft Street will be closed during filming of movie Filming
in the movie “Cookie’s Fortune” will necessitate traffic to be rerouted
on Craft St. for several days during May and June. Banana split party honors two seniors Julie
Power and Megan Teel were honored with a banana split party in the home
of Mrs. Charles Poer. Those attending were Alice Childers, Judit
Paterizia, Tara Thompson, Bea McCrosky, Helen Power, Vickie Teel,
Miranda Fitch, Lauren Walker, Cameron Strickland, Anna Greer, Irene
Strickland, Vicki Aldy, Melissa Haley and Susan Ash. James Rayford selected “teacher of the year” James
Patrick Rayford was selected “teacher of the year, 1997-98” at the 2000
student Redan High School in DeKalb County, Atlanta, Ga. He is a 1985
graduate of Holly Springs High School and received a BS in mathematics
from Rust College in 1980. He is the son of James T. and Barbara
Rayford of Holly Springs. 25 Years Ago - May 19, 1983 Lower utility bills - Aldermen told of gas price reductions Natural
gas prices may soon be coming down so utility bills may also be “taking
a step in the right direction.” That report was given to aldermen in
their regular meeting by City Engineer Walter Paschal. According to
Paschal, a price reduction was passed along to the natural gas company,
who in turn is making an attempt to pass the reduction along to its
customers. Jones to be law graduate J. Kizer Jones, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Jones of Holly springs, is one of 87 students who are
candidates for law degrees to be presented May 16. Thursday Club hears songs by Miss Clark Mrs.
Fred M. Belk Sr. entertained the Thursday Club on May 12 at First
United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hindman Doxey presented a splendid
program on “Music Fills Holly Springs.” Two of the songs presented were
written by Miss Kate Freeman Clark. 50 Years Ago - May 15, 1958 Confederate Ball tomorrow night Probably
the outstanding entertainment of the Pilgrimage will be held on
tomorrow night. The local high school gymnasium will be the scene for
the Confederate Ball, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Music for the ball will be furnished by Clyde Leopard’s Orchestra
featuring Miss Barbara Pittman, recording star. Miss Pittman has made
popular such recordings as “Two Fools In Love,” “Everlasting Love,” and
“Cold, Cold, Heart.” Yawl Kum! Negro 4-H Club Rally outstanding Lessye
Lee Davis, Negro Home Demonstration Agent, and her helpers, made their
4-H Club Rally one of the most successful ever held here. Lessye Lee is
most popular with all the people of this county and her efficiency is
demonstrated by the many prize winners Marshall County has each year in
district and state events. The South Reporter is grateful for the
program carried on through her department.
