A
public hearing to discuss the proposed supervisor redistricting plans
is set for Monday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. in boardroom on Market Street in
Holly Springs.
The
public is invited to attend,
make comments, and ask questions at this hearing. Afterward, the
Marshall County Board of Supervisors will approve one of two plans to
send to the U.S. Department of Justice for review and approval.

One arrested after pursuit By SUE WATSON Staff Writer One
suspect was taken into custody and a six-hour manhunt for a second
suspect was called off Friday in connection with the theft of a car on
the shoulder of Highway 78 East, according to Kerry Reid with the
Byhalia Police Department. The incident began at
about 1:35 p.m. Friday when an off-duty Byhalia police officer
witnessed someone breaking out a window in a car parked on the shoulder
of the highway, Reid said. Byhalia police set up a watch at the Highway
309 overpass at Highway 78 and watched for the vehicle, which was
reportedly being pushed along the highway by a pickup. Full Story

Holly Springs Fire Department pumper truck turned on its side Friday,
while responding to a fire call on Highway 349 in the Bethlehem
community. The pumper tanker was totaled and four
firefighters were taken to Baptist Hospital in Oxford for treatment of
injuries and released, according to chief Kenny Holbrook. Full Story
One charged with uttering forgery • More arrests expected in case By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
suspect has been arrested and charged with uttering forgery following
the emptying of a checking account of a customer at the Bank of Holly
Springs, according the sheriff Kenny Dickerson. Julie
Gravely, 32, of the 1100 block of County Road 339, Falkner, was
arrested and charged with multiple counts of uttering forgery totaling
about $15,000 to $20,000, the sheriff said. Gravely is being held in
jail on $50,000 bond. The Mississippi Department of Corrections has a
hold on the subject as well, he said. Full Story
Bones found likely tied to history of Thistledome By BARRY BURLESON Editor Human bones found Wednesday of last week underneath Thistledome in Byhalia likely date back to more than 150 years ago. Owner
Todd Maxwell, who is a nurse, said the bones of three small children
were accidentally unearthed during restoration work on the historic

Kinkade makes first visit to board By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Bill
Kinkade, newly elected state representative for District 52, visited
the Marshall County Board of Supervisors recently to pave the way for
future cooperation with the county. He said he has big shoes to fill as he takes over the position of former Rep. Tommy Woods in January. Woods retired in 2012. Full Story

to 38 calls
during the past week.

1; animals, 2; assists, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 1;
fires, 1; medical 6; and harassment, 1.
Byhalia police officers also made one
arrest during the
past week.
Police go to 105 calls Officers with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 105 calls last week, according to chief William Hollowell. The
calls included – disturbances, 8; alarms, 12; larcenies, 4; assaults,
4; accidents, 4; assists to agencies, 5; domestics, 7; funeral escorts,
3; burglaries, 3; auto thefts, 1; 911 hang-ups, 2; shots fired, 1; and
51 miscellaneous calls. The dog catcher responded to 3 calls. Full Story
Board fails to override mayor veto By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Some
leftover business from December 18, 2012, drew interest at the
January 2, 2013, Holly Springs Board of Aldermen meeting. Alderman
Johnnie Ree Bagley-Johnson made a motion to override Mayor Andre’
DeBerry’s December 26 veto of board action not to rehire W.T.
Consultants of Jackson. Alderman Harvey Payne seconded. Full Story
Tourism hires office manager By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Shamecca Austin Fitts is the new office manager at the Holly Springs Tourism Bureau. She took over duties Friday, Jan. 4. She is a 2001 graduate of Holly Springs High School and attended Blue Mountain College two years, majoring in general studies. Full Story
