A
public hearing to discuss the proposed supervisor redistricting plans
is set for Monday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m. in boardroom on Market Street in
Holly Springs. The public is invited to attend,
make comments, and ask questions at this hearing. Afterward, the
Marshall County Board of Supervisors will approve one of two plans to
send to the U.S. Department of Justice for review and approval. The
plans would equalize district voting age populations by restructuring
the District 3 geographic boundaries to reduce population in that
district. The plans call for including those voters in either District
1 or District 4 and one of these districts will shift to add voters to
District 5, a district whose population has not increased in the last
10 years, according to the 2010 Census data. While
District 3 gained population in the last 10 years, other districts did
not grow at such a pace. District 2 boundaries will remain essentially
unchanged. The redistricting is required every 10
years if voter distributions have changed significantly. Rules require
that district populations be within plus or minus five percent in each
district. After the plan is approved and
submitted, the county will begin to work on redistricting plans for the
justice court judge districts and constable districts.
