was a cold, wintry night when the Devils of Ashland swept into the
Cardinals’ territory last Friday, looking to knock off their rivals in
the neighboring county. | Photos by Barry Burleson

The Potts Camp girls came
out a bit sluggish, however, they registered the first five points and
then the visitors took over. They weren’t blistering the track; they
were just steady. The Lady Devils were getting distributive scoring
help and went to a 20-16 first quarter lead. The
second frame was low speed and low scoring but proved beneficial to the
Lady Cardinals. Their defense thwarted the Lady Devils’ offense, held
them to just four points and came out ahead 26-24 at the buzzer. The
pace quickened in the third but the scoring remained about even. Coach
Tana Miller’s Lady Cardinals started to make some progressive runs near
the end of the frame and stayed out front 48-43. Early
in the fourth period this looked as though it was going to be a
wire-stretcher. The Lady Devils were beginning to counter every move of
the hosts. They scored and momentum swung like a pendulum throughout. The Lady Cardinals, with a little over two minutes left, had a one-point lead (54-53) and an anxious following in the bleachers. It
didn’t help when Ashland’s Alontra Tucker got a pair of back-to-back
breakaways and Potts Camp called for time, down by three. Jessica
Peterson pumped in a short jumper to trim it to one and then tied it at
57. The Lady Cardinals got a pair of free throws from Tenesha Woods to
secure the 59-57 win. | | Brantley

It avenged an earlier loss this season to the Lady Devils. Woods led the floor with 23, followed by Peterson with 13 and Hailey Davis with 12. Alontra Tucker led the way for the Lady Devils with 22, while Jayliyah Godwin had 12 and Tymentrica Reaves 10. Cardinals bow to Devils The
Cardinals and Blue Devils got off to a fast start, tied quickly at 6-6.
Each side was definitely hustling, but neither could manage more than
two points each to close out the quarter, which ended in the 8-8 knot. The
Cardinals brought some heat in the second. They were hanging right with
the Blue Devils. They got a couple of treys from their perimeter
shooters and were leading by a digit when Potts Camp’s Courtney Grimes
went down with a debilitating leg injury. The delicate nature of the
mishap caused an extensive delay. Intermission came with the score
tied, 20-20. Both squads struggled in the third and played to yet another tie at 32-32. The Potts Camp boys were battling. Time
and again it appeared as if the Cardinals were going to break out in
front and hold on to defeat the visitors. It was tied at 37 about
midway through that final period. The Blue Devils took the lead one final time and slowly moved it to the 51-43 win. Jamarquis Foster scored 16 for Potts Camp, trailed by Brantley Harris with eight. Kadijah Shelton led Ashland with 14, flanked by Tirease Williams and Garius Scruggs with nine each. Schedule The
Lady Cardinals (14-4) and Cardinals (1-17) were scheduled to visit
North Pontotoc Tuesday. They visit rival Hickory Flat Friday night in
Region 2-2A action. | | Jamarquis Foster (21) of Potts Camp avoids some Ashland pressure in the game Friday night. |
