Mississippi Springfest opening May 7

This year’s 17th annual Mississippi Springfest will be held Wednesday, May 7 through Saturday, May 10 in Ashland at the intersection of Highways 4 and 5. There will be free parking and free admission. The festival will feature arts and crafts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This year we will have two feature stages, the main stage and the VIP stage, where there will be a lot of entertainment going on. The festival will officially open Wednesday, May 7 at 5 p.m. with family arm band night on the midway. On Thursday, May 8 the festival will be featuring a magic show with Jimmy Dixon Productions at 6 p.m. and then at 7 p.m., there will be good ole gospel music with “The Almost Famous” Crains from Southaven and the Bluff City Quartet from Memphis, Tenn., all on the VIP stage. On Friday, May 9, the KCBS Barbecue Contest will begin at 9 a.m. and will continue through Saturday afternoon, May 10. Scott Steele, originally from Ashland, and his friends will be performing at 6 p.m. on the main stage. Jimmy Dixon will be performing his magic again on the main stage at 7:30 p.m. and our highlight for the night will be the Parrots of the Caribbean starting at 8:30 p.m. They will be doing a two-hour Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show. May 10 the Kid’s Q Cooking Contest will begin at 8 a.m., the Springfest Car Show will begin at 9 a.m. and the midway will open at 10 a.m. There will be a parade of cars that will go through town around 1:30 p.m. Falling Apart, a group of young men ages 18 to 25 from Hickory Flat, will begin the entertainment on the main stage at 2 p.m. B.J. Brooks will be performing a tribute to Elvis and Friends at 3 p.m., also on the main stage. The Championship Hotdog Eating Contest will be in the VIP tent at 5 p.m. You have to be at least 16 to enter. Driving Sideways from Olive Branch will be on the main stage at 6 p.m. The Mississippi Springfest second annual Beauties and Beaus Pageant will begin at 7 p.m. on the VIP stage and they will be featuring Jimmy Dixon and his magic show during their intermission. The highlights for Saturday night will be the Corvettes from Thaxton performing oldies at 8 p.m. and Braden Gray and Loose Gravel from New Albany performing country and western music at 9:30 p.m. on the main stage.

During the festival the Phillip’s Exotic Petting Zoo, Safari Racing Pigs and the Banana Derby will be open each day and night. The events are free to all.

All Benton County Schools will have School Day on Thursday, May 8 for the elementary children and May 9 for the high schools, both from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The children will be able to enjoy the midway, magic shows, pig races, the Banana Derby and the Exotic Petting Zoo.
