Hoyt’s homer buries Panthers
• Marshall meets Central Hinds this week for north half crown

An excited Vince Hoyt (middle) is swarmed by teammates after his solo home run Friday night won the game for the Patriots and sent them to round three.

Coach Bart Jenkins was surprised Vince Hoyt got another swing Friday night.

But the senior did and he definitely made it count.

Hoyt, who had torched Canton Academy in the playoff series, nailed a walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth to send Marshall Academy to the next round.

Early exit in playoffs unusual for Lakers

The last throes of the first round in the NBA playoffs draw testily to a close with a couple of shutouts (sweeps) and some rancor.

Possibly a sad sight was seeing the entire Lakers retinue displaying white towels in their do-or-die game against the San Antonio Spurs. This is territory quite unfamiliar to the Lakers for the most part.

Potts Camp’s stay in the Class 2A state baseball playoffs was a short one, thanks to tradition rich East Union.

The Cardinals saw their season come to an end with six-run and 10-run losses to the Urchins last weekend.
