Holly Springs election next Tuesday
By BARRY BURLESON
Next Tuesday, May 7, is election day in Holly Springs.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the fire station.
Absentee voting also continues for mayor and aldermen. Individuals who will not be able to vote in person in the May 7 election may come to the clerk’s office at city hall and vote absentee in person through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or this Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. The deadline to vote absentee in person is this Saturday, May 4, at noon.
Mail-in absentee ballots must be received at the city’s post office box by 5 p.m. Monday, May 6, in order to be counted. Call the city clerk’s office at 252-4652 to inquire about how a mail-in absentee ballot can be sent to the voter’s address.
The ballot also includes a decision on a $10 million bond issue. The Holly Springs School District is seeking funds for construction of a new Intermediate School and renovations at other campuses.
“Our Intermediate School is no longer adequate to provide a quality education for our students,” said Irene Walton Turnage, superintendent of education. “We have patched and made do, but our children deserve a facility that will help them receive a 21st Century education.”
Turnage said passing the bond will result in the owner of a $75,000 house paying less than $6 a month in additional taxes; the owner of a $15,000 car paying $3 a month in additional taxes; and the owner of a $250,000 business paying $25 a month in additional taxes.
Registered voters living in the Holly Springs School District, but outside the city limits, can vote on the bond issue only – not for mayor and aldermen. Separate voting machines will be set up at the fire station on the day of the election for those living outside the city limits but inside the Holly Springs School District.
Sixty percent of the voters must approve the referendum for it to pass.
For more info, call the city clerk’s office at 252-4652.
