Special election Tuesday By BARRY BURLESON Editor A
special election to fill the U.S. House of Representatives 1st
Congressional District position for the remainder of the year will be
held next Tuesday, April 22. The seat has been open since Roger Wicker’s appointment to the Senate in December of last year. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Six
names will appear on the special election ballot, but only four will
count. The active candidates are the two winners in the April 1 primary
election runoffs – Travis W. Childers and Greg Davis – along with Wally
Pang and John M. Wages Jr. Steve Holland and
Glenn L. McCullough Jr., whose names will be on the special election
ballot, have said they do not want the temporary job (serving until
next January) since they lost their party’s nominations in the April 1
vote. They sought to have their names removed from the ballot, but an
opinion issued Friday by the state attorney general said they will
still be listed. The AG’s office said because the ballots already had
been printed, their names had to remain. To help
voters, polling places will have signs saying that Holland and
McCullough have withdrawn from the race and don’t intend to serve, even
if elected. The special election April 22 will be
nonpartisan. All candidates will be on the same ballot and candidates’
parties will not be listed. Absentee voting for
the April 22 special election is available in the Marshall County
circuit clerk’s office during regular hours – Monday through Friday
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will also be open this Saturday, April
19, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon for absentee voting. General Election Childers
and Davis will meet in the November 4 general election, with the winner
filling the U.S. House of Representatives seat formerly held by Wicker.
It will be a two-year term, starting in 2009.
