W. Carrington, 96, of Byhalia, died April 10, 2008 in
Holly Springs. She was the widow of R.E. Carrington Jr.
Services
were held at 2 p.m. on April 13 at Byhalia United
Methodist Church. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements.
She
leaves a son, Bob Carrington of Byhalia; a daughter, Betty
Carrington Vandiver of Garland, Tx.; four grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
In
lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to
Byhalia United Methodist Church.
Ula B. Jeffries
Ula
B. Jeffries, 87, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Lamar, died
April 2, 2008 at his home. He was the widower of Jinnie Bean Jeffries.
He was a retired machinist and World War II U.S. Navy veteran.
Services
were held at 1 p.m. on April 11 at Greenwood MB
Church in Lamar. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Ronnie
Franklin officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
He
leaves five daughters, Florence Lockhart, Eloise Jeffries,
Elois Jeffries, Dorothy Craft, Elizabeth Malone, all of Chicago, Ill.;
a sister, Lorine Bean of Lamar; 52 grandchildren, 42
great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by a son, James Moore.
Annell Schmitt
Annell
(Nell) Schmitt, 71, of Johnston, Iowa, formerly of St.
Lucas, Iowa and Waterford, died April 9, 2008 at Mercy Hospice in
Johnston. She was a graduate of Holly Springs High School.
Active in St. Luke’s Rosary Society, she served as an
officer. She was a CCD teacher for several years at St.
Luke’s Parish and served as CCD coordinator. She served as
member of the South Winneshiek Community School Board for seven years.
She was employed by H&R Block and later obtained her real
estate license. She was a real estate agent for Haugen Century 21 in
Decorah and Dave Kelly Realty in Decorah. She retired in 2005 after 25
years as a real estate agent.
Mass
of Christian Burial was at noon on April 12 at St.
Luke’s Catholic Church in St. Lucas. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Rev. Marvin Salz officiated. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
She
leaves her husband, Earl Schmitt; six children, Felicia
Miedema of Urbandale, Iowa, Sharon Cloud of Glenview, Ill., Warren
Schmitt of North Sioux City, S.D., Sheila Blanco of Chicago, Ill.,
Chris Schmitt of De Moines, Iowa, Jason Schmitt of Ames, Iowa; a
sister, Sue Hensley of Huntsville, Ala., four brothers, Hoyt Johnson of
Holly Springs, Fred Johnson of Oxford, Lake Johnson of Holly Springs,
Trent Johnson of Booneville; a half-sister, Donnie Pottenger of
Billings, Mont. and 13 grandchildren.
Wardell Watson Jr.
Wardell
(Dick) Watson Jr., 58, of Holly Springs, died April 5,
2008 at Alliance HealthCare System. He was a member of the male chorus,
mass choir, a member of Masonic Lodge Powell Chapel #339 and a retired
custodian with Griffin, Inc. in Byhalia.
Services
were held at 12 noon on April 12 at Mt. Newell MB
Church in Red Banks, where he was a member. Burial was in the church
cemetery. Rev. Arthur Fitzpatrick officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He
leaves his wife, Hattie Mae Campbell Watson; three
daughters, Eveline Balfour, Mary Campbell, Crystal Watson, all of Holly
Springs; two sons, Robert James Campbell, Frederick Campbell, both of
Holly Springs; three sisters, Barbara Watson of Red Banks, Jerline
Watson, Ella B. Malone, both of Holly Springs; three brothers, Leon
Watson of Mt. Pleasant, Boyce Watson of Red Banks, John Lee Sumlar of
Batesville; and four grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertha Hollowell,
Winnie B. Watson; and two brothers, Ula C. Watson, John Wesley Watson.
Pallbearers
were Masonic Lodge, Powell Chapel #339. Honorary
pallbearers were Frederick Campbell, Donnell Tucker, John Sumlar, Leon
Watson, Robert Campbell, Earl Balfour and Boyce Watson.
