“A true Southern lady: To be a Southern lady, it is not necessary to be successful in your life, but carry even your misfortune with style and grace. It’s not just good manners or style in clothing, etc., it’s attitude of wanting to behave and act gracefully. To be a lady, it’s not to be weak - even if it is in a way to be feminine. Being a lady is not a trick - it’s reseating others and waiting for respect from others. A lady does not stay long in a company of those who cannot respect her. Being a lady is to know how to keep good company. It is not just manners - it’s a basic ability to discuss interesting matters, to know when to laugh at jokes and when to ignore them. It is listening to others and understanding that one is not the center of the world.” That sums up the type of lady Jan Morris was, a true Southern lady.

A vision of beauty everywhere she went - it didn’t matter if she was at a ballfield or gym, she was always dressed to the nines. Her smile, which I don’t think she ever removed, would light up a room. If you were having a bad day, just looking down her way would brighten your spirits. She was always in a good mood - I never, ever saw her with a frown. Hard to imagine someone always being that happy, but Miss Jan was.

A devoted Marshall Academy fan, she was always there to cheer on the Patriots with her husband, Mr. Danny, at her side. They attended all sporting events from basketball to baseball to softball and football. The love she had for her grandchildren was more than apparent, sitting in all sorts of weather to watch them play. It was easily visible the shared admiration they had for each other - the love of a grandmother and her grandchildren is unbreakable, as well as undeniable.

It is hard to imagine she has gone. I can tell you this, Heaven gained one very special angel Friday. Reassuring is the fact that there is one more person up there to help all of us along during the tough times.

I will always carry the fond memories I have of Miss Jan with me, close to my heart. Having known someone like her is like knowing an angel right here on earth. A true Southern lady.

Tyshone Grigsby and Porche Coleman

Couple say vows in March 30 ceremony at Hopewell MB Church in Carbondale, Ill.

Shirley Washington Grisgby of Chicago, Ill. announces the engagement and the marriage of her son, Tyshone P. Grigsby of Carbondale, Ill., to Porche Coleman. Tyshone is also the son of the late John Grigsby.

He is the grandson of Jennie Washington and the late Joseph Washington and the late George and Beatrice Grigsby.

Porche is the daughter of Barbra and Johnny Coleman of Chicago, Ill.

Both she and Tyshone attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where they met on campus. Tyshone majored in mortuary science and Porche majored in financial management.

The wedding was held at 4:30 p.m. on March 30, 2013, at Hopewell MB Church in Carbondale.

Eric Cox and Candyce Colston

Candyce Colston and Eric Cox to wed April 13 at New Sardis MB Church in Memphis, Tenn.

Mr. and Mrs. Milton (Jennifer) Colston of Olive Branch are pleased to announce the wedding of their daughter, Candyce R. Colston to Eric L. Cox, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin (Charlene) Jones and Mr. Grayland Cox of Chulahoma.

The couple will marry Saturday, April 13, 2013 at New Sardis MB Church at 4 p.m. in Memphis, Tenn. A reception will follow at New Shelby MBC Extended Life Center.

After a wedding trip to Las Vegas, Nev., the newlyweds will reside in Olive Branch.
