Melvin E. Childress
Melvin
E. (Dooney) Childress, 68,
of
Byhalia, died March 29, 2008 at his home. He was a Navy veteran, a
member of Byhalia Lodge 115 and Oak Grove Lodge 293, served as District
Deputy Grand Lecturer of Grand Lodge of Mississippi, past member of
board of directors for Marshall Academy and retired from Northcentral
Electric Power Association after 46 years.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. on
April
1 at Brantley Funeral Home Chapel in Olive Branch. Burial was in
Byhalia Cemetery.
He
leaves his wife, Dot
Childress; a
daughter, Renea Childress Reed of Holly Springs; his mother, Ruth
Childress of Senatobia; three brothers, Raymond Childress of Texarkana,
Ark., Fred Childress of Senatobia, Don Childress of Hernando; two
granddaughters; and a step-grandson.
He
was preceded in death by a
son, Mike
Childress; his father, Eugene Childress; and two brothers, Ted and
Russell Childress.
Memorial

Jude
Children’s Research Hospital.

Harden, 81, of Holly
Springs,
died March 24, 2008 at his home. He was a factory worker.
Services
were held at 1 p.m. on
March
29 at Wilkins Chapel CME Church in Waterford. Burial was in Wilkins
Cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater was in charge of
arrangements.

leaves his wife, Lillie Walker
Harden; two daughters, Lacy Tunstall of Memphis, Tenn., Lillie Thomas
of Aurora, Ill.; seven sons, Jean Autry Harden of Atlanta, Ga., Robert
E. Harden of Chulahoma, James Edward Harden of New Albany, Leon Harden
of Aurora, Ill., Lee Andrew Harden of Aurora, Ill., Charles Wayne
Harden of Aurora, Ill., Glenn Edward Harden of Chulahoma; three
brothers, J.B. Bell, Johnny Bell, Booker T. Sandridge, all of Chicago,
Ill.; and 54 grandchildren.
Wharey A. Reed
Wharey
A. Reed, 79, of Pulaski,
Tenn.,
died March 4, 2008 at the Alvin C. York Veteran’s Hospital in
Murfreesboro, Tenn. He was retired from the Air Force, serving in World
War II, and a member of St. Andrew Memorial United Methodist Church.
Services
were held on March 8 in
the
chapel of Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home. Burial was in Giles
Memory Gardens with full military honors. Rev. Chris Seifert officiated.
He
leaves his wife, Anna Reed; a
son,
Wharey Arden Reed Jr. of Greenville, S.C.; a daughter, Melody Reed
Garner of Simpsonville, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Ralph Young.
He
was preceded in death by three
brothers, Walter Reed, T.L. Reed, Ben Grant Reed; and a sister, Sallye

Smith, 66, of Byhalia,
died
March 25, 2008 at her home. She was the widow of Lester Smith Jr. and a
Baptist.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. on
March
27 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery
in Ripley.
She
leaves her mother,
Ethel
Jumper of Byhalia, six half-brothers, a half-sister, seven stepsisters,
seven foster children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Gervis Wright
Gervis
(D.W.) Wright, 72, of
Farmerville, La., formerly of Holly Springs, died March 25, 2008 at
Union General Hospital in Farmerville. He was a retired machine
operator with Taylor Construction.
Services
were held at 11 a.m. on
March
29 at Powell Chapel MB Church in Holly Springs, where he was a member.
Burial was in Free Branch MB Church Cemetery. Rev. Eddie Walker
officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
He
leaves his wife, Rena Mae
Wright; a
daughter, Chaderice Wright of Holly Springs; a brother, William Henry
Wright of Holly Springs; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by six
sisters, Flora Isom, Geneva Reliford, Evelyn Jane Hagins, Mary Frances
McNeal, Lovie Lee Luellen, Ada Florence Washington; and a brother,
George (Cush) Washington.
Pallbearers
were Frank Isom, Troy
Wright, Preston Isom, Robert Isom, Ivory Reliford and Tim Allen.
Honorary pallbearers were Mark Anthony Wright, Mark Wright, Chester
Isom, Taiwon Hughes, James Isom and Odis Reliford.
