| Bypass paving on go with ARRA funds By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Holly Springs Industrial Bypass Road will be paved with $2.5 million
from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds, according to
Congressman Travis Childers. The 1.5-mile project
in Marshall County was funded, along with about $25 million listed for
ARRA projects in the Mississippi counties of Bolivar, Washington, Pearl
River, Lauderdale, Tishomingo, and Sharkey. Full Story
Talk on vacancy heats up meeting By BARRY BURLESON Editor A
need to fill the position of supervisor of building and grounds ignited
heated discussion during the March 17 meeting of the Holly Springs
mayor and board of aldermen. Mayor Andre’ DeBerry brought the matter up after city leaders had gone through their agenda. He said, “We’re in dire straits,” due to the arrival of grass-growing season and use of the ball fields at the park. The
job has been vacant for some time. The city advertised its availability
in the latter part of last year. After going through the applications
and conducting interviews, Mayor DeBerry brought two finalists before

| | A swarm of honey bees picked an awning post in
front of Booker Hardware in downtown Holly Springs Friday, March 20, as
a place to rest. The beekeeper, Eaylon Cannon of Byhalia, was called to
remove the swarm, and the street walkway was made safe once more.
Swarming, which takes place in bee colonies usually from late spring to
summer, is a method of propagation of a hive that has outgrown its
quarters. |
New bank opens in Barton By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The clouds held back their rain Friday at noon in Barton for the grand opening of the First Security Bank branch office. An
estimated 150 members of the banking and business community, as well as
local friends and customers turned out for a warm reception,

Ida B. Wells Museum and Cultural Center of African American History has
been added to the Holly Springs Pilgrimage tour this year for the first
time. Full Story Annual event April 17-19 By BARRY BURLESON Editor It’s April, and that means the tour of historic homes is just two weeks away. The 71st annual Pilgrimage, sponsored by the Holly Springs Garden Club, will be held Friday-Sunday, April 17-19. Activities
also include a cemetery tour, carriage rides, Civil War re-enactors,
luncheons, arts and crafts, plus the newest addition – the Pilgrimage

Holly High Robohawks compete in Bayou Regional event in New Orleans Teams
from 31 high schools in nine states recently competed for top honors
during the 2009 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and
Technology) Robotics Bayou Regional Competition held March 19-21 in New
Orleans. The competitors included the Holly Springs High School Robohawks. Full Story
Health centers get recovery funding Mississippi’s
First Congressional District has been allocated $789,452 from the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand services offered at
North Mississippi community health centers, Congressman Travis Childers
announced last week. Overall, Mississippi will receive $6.3 million. Full Story
Byhalia police go to 22 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 22 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3; motor
vehicle accidents, 3; disturbances, 2; animal-related calls, 1;
assists, 2; medical assistance calls, 3; miscellaneous calls, 8. Byhalia police officers also made four arrests during the past week.
