Mayor DeBerry presents proclamation Mary Walls-Smith honored on her 100th birthday | | Mary Walls-Smith |
A
flurry of red and white balloons nestled on tables and against a red
brick wall which served as the backdrop for Mary Walls-Smith’s 100th
birthday celebration in Holly Springs on March 15; her actual birthday
was March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Mrs. Walls-Smith was surrounded by
family and friends who came from as far away as Georgia and Michigan. Mrs.
Walls-Smith was born in Marshall County and lived most of her life in
and around Holly Springs. She currently lives in Coldwater, where she
has been for the last 14 years. She lives independently next door to
her older son, Jesse Walls Jr. Her younger son, Lemuel, resides in
Flint, Mich. Mrs. Walls-Smith remembers the
following as highlights of her illustrious life: visiting the Holy Land
in the early 1970s; living during the reign of 18 different presidents
of the United Staes; never having had to spend a single minute in a
hospital as a patient; having had a headache only once in her life,
when she accidentally fell in her home years ago; teaching school for
one year when she was in her early 20s (she said she stopped teaching
because her students were as old as she was). The one thing that she
periodically talks about learning now is how to drive a car, the reason
being that she sometimes wants to go shopping or visit a friend, and
there is no one available to take her. She was
especially honored on her birthday with a proclamation issued her by
mayor, Andre DeBerry. She was emotionally touched through songs by her
former neighbor, Mary Brown of Holly Springs, and also by one of the
trustees of her home church, Central Avenue Church of Christ,
Coldwater), Bro. Willie Ramsey. She marveled at spoken reflections of
her life and friendship given by her relatives and friends. She thanks everyone for attending and for the beautiful gifts. She is praying for continued blessings for all.
