Runoff vote set for April 1 By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
primary election runoff for the Congressional District 1 seat will be
Tuesday, April 1. Candidates are set for runoff on both Democratic and
Republican party tickets. In the Republican
Party, Glenn McCullough Jr. of Tupelo faces Greg Davis of DeSoto
County. Candidates left standing on the Democratic Party ticket are
Travis Childers of Booneville and Steve Holland of Plantersville. Figures
reported by the North Mississippi Daily Journal March 13 showed
McCullough the top vote getter on the Republican side with 39 percent
of the vote. Davis claimed 37 percent. Randy Russell took 24 percent
and was eliminated from the race. On the
Democratic side, Childers took 42 percent with Holland getting 31
percent of the vote. Candidates eliminated from the race were Marshall
Coleman, Brain Neely and Ken Hurt who collectively took 27 percent of
the vote. Statewide, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama won
the Democratic Party caucus for president with 61 percent of the vote.
Sen. Hillary Clinton won 37 percent of the vote. In the Republican Party caucus for president, Sen. John McCain was the winner. Marshall County results In
Marshall County, Primary Election results show 40.45 percent of
registered voters cast ballots, according to official final results for
the March 11 primary election and caucuses for president. On the Democratic ticket, Barack Obama claimed 60 percent of the vote to Hillary Clinton’s 37.4 percent. On the Republican Party ticket, John McCain took 73 percent of the vote. In the race for U.S. Senate, Erick R. Fleming took 62 percent of the Democratic party vote to Shawn O’Hara’s 37.8 percent. Incumbent Republican Party candidate Thad Cochran was unopposed. Fleming and Cochran face off next in the November 4 general election. In
the 1st Congressional District race, Travis Childers took 45.8 percent
of the Democratic Party vote in the county. Marshall Coleman took 21
percent and Steve Holland 13 percent. Bringing up the rear were James
Kenneth Hurt with 7.5 percent and Brian Henry Neely with 12 percent. On
the Republican Party ticket, Greg Davis won 42.5 percent of the vote
for Congress, with Randy Russell taking 32.9 percent and Glen
McCullough claiming 24 percent. Next election Voters
must have registered by February 10 to vote in the April 1 runoff
election, according to circuit clerk Lucy Carpenter. Voters who voted
in the March 11 election will have to vote the same party ticket in the
April 1 run-off election. Absentee voters can
request ballots at the circuit clerk’s office and vote in person by
absentee during regular week-day working hours and on Saturday, March
22, and Saturday, March 29 between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.
