RiverKings make stop at school By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Some Mississippi RiverKings paid a visit to hockey players at the Holly Springs Primary School last week. The visit coincided with a good behavior party for children. Louis
Dumont, co-captain and #16, and Derek Landmesser, #55 and team captain,
and assistant Whitley Rives helped organize the activity which
including a review of basic hockey rules and shots and equipment used
by the professionals. Fredrick Raiford, goalie
for the championship game won by Mrs. Breland’s and Mrs. Anderson’s
class, was dressed out by the professionals. Some students were
selected to make some shots during the short program. Rives reminded students that hockey, as in other team sports, is all about teamwork. She also emphasized the importance of keeping the grades up. “When
you get to high school and college, the coach will bench you if you
don’t have good grades,” she said. “So it’s important to do well in
school.” Physical education instructor Vicki Rodgers said one of the teams in the school’s championship playoffs was named Riverkings. The
Mississippi RiverKings noticed the school had hockey competitions when
a photo was posted on the school’s website that had a banner that read,
“Congratulations Hockey Champs.” The RiverKings
called the school after seeing the poster and asked to visit the school
and do an exhibition for the children, Rodgers said. “They were very, very surprised we played hockey in this area,” she said. Children
and staff got a thrill out of the exhibition and students received
RiverKings thunder sticks as gifts and ice cream push-ups as treats. Hockey
team champions this year were Mrs. Breland’s and Mrs. Anderson’s
kindergarten class with goalies Fredrick Raiford and Allen Everette. | Photo by Sue Watson | Prizes
