Qualifying open for city races
By BARRY BURLESON
The new year, 2013, brings with it municipal elections.
Qualifying is open for those who want to seek mayor and board of aldermen positions in Holly Springs, Byhalia and Potts Camp. The deadline for signing up to run is Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m.
Each candidate must be a qualified voter and resident of the city or ward for which he or she is seeking office.
Candidates who qualify as members of a political party must pay a $10 filing fee and submit a written statement of intent to the municipal clerk’s office. Independent candidates pay no fee but must file a petition with the signatures of at least 50 voters from their ward – or from the city if running for mayor or at-large alderman.
The primary elections (if needed) will be held Tuesday, May 7, with a runoff date of Tuesday, May 21.
Municipal general elections are slated for Tuesday, June 4. The new four-year term for city elected officials will begin Monday, July 1.
City of Holly Springs voters will choose a mayor, an alderman at-large and aldermen for Wards 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Voters in the towns of Byhalia and Potts Camp will pick a mayor and five aldermen at-large.
For more information on the municipal elections, call the respective city halls – Holly Springs, 252-4652; Byhalia, 838-2135; and Potts Camp, 333-7285.
