Winter woodpecker
A
woodpecker enjoys winter in Holly Springs, on a tree in the front yard
of the home of Barry and Pam Burleson. Bubba Hubbard, director of
Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, said the member of the woodpecker
family is a male yellow-bellied sapsucker. “It is one of eight
woodpecker species we generally see around here,” he said. “The
sapsucker is only here during the winter, staying in the northern U.S.
and Canada in the summer.” He said this has been a great mast year for
oaks, hickories, beech trees and more. Countless species are
benefiting, including the sapsucker, red-headed woodpecker, red-bellied
and pileated woodpeckers, waterfowl, deer, turkey, squirrels, etc. |
