Byhalia sweeps county rival

A 13-0 run late in the second quarter ignited the Byhalia Indians Saturday night on their way to an 80-48 win over Marshall County rival Potts Camp.

The Cardinals had sliced a double-digit deficit in the first quarter to six midway through the second. Byhalia’s Avion Graham responded. He blistered the net with a pair of threes to put the visiting squad up 37-22. Then Corvell Todd cashed in back-to-back buckets to make it 41-22.

Potts Camp’s deficit was 41-24 at halftime.

The Cardinals would not go away in the third. They trimmed the hole to 14 when Tavaccius Burnside scored four straight points.

But Jamaris Briggs scored inside the lane and Graham drilled another long-range shot and suddenly Byhalia was back in full control at 57-35. The Indians carried a 63-35 lead to the fourth quarter and cruised to the 32-point victory.

Antwon Porter was the top gun for Byhalia. He scored 19. Graham had 12, Briggs 11 and Xzaverion Crockett 10.

No Cardinals were in double digits. Burnside had nine, and scoring eight each were Alec Smith, Trell Kimmons, Micah Powers and Mitchell Saulsberry.

The Byhalia Lady Indians were dominant in the first game of the night, taking an 81-40 victory over Potts Camp.

The Lady Indians turned the heat up via its full-court press, forcing several Potts Camp turnovers. Ariel Tunstall’s basket off the press put Byhalia up 25-9 early in the second quarter and forced a Potts Camp timeout.

After the pause in action, the Lady Indians continued to use their defense to generate points on the other end. Tunstall scored again and Tiyanna Powell got a lay-up and the lead was quickly 29-9. Leekadra Smith closed the second quarter by hitting three three-point shots, and Byhalia’s big lead was 44-16.

Jazmine Anderson tried to give the Lady Cardinals some momentum early in the third when she gunned in a three, but the Lady Indians just kept on keeping on and eased to the 41-point victory.

Smith was on fire for Byhalia. She finished with 27 points, including seven threes. Powell and Shaquira Caradine each scored 14. Kavacia Johnson scored 10 points and had 13 assists and seven steals.

For Potts Camp, J. Anderson finished with 16, including four threes. Destinee Hannah scored 10.

The Lady Indians and Indians were scheduled to host Southaven Tuesday night. They visit county rival H.W. Byers Saturday night. Next Tuesday, Dec. 13, they visit Olive Branch.

The Lady Cardinals and Cardinals were scheduled to visit county rival H.W. Byers Tuesday night. They go to Lake Cormorant Friday night and visit North Panola Saturday night.
