Vote Tuesday and get ready for the holidays

October has flown by, and we have jumped into November to lead us to time change, election day, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.

Don’t forget Tuesday, Nov. 5, daylight savings time ends. So turn your clocks back Saturday night before you go to bed, or you could wake up late for church.

On Tuesday, November 7, the election will be held. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Everyone should get out and vote. If you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice. We need to vote for better representation, more community funding, and a better quality of life.

Suppose we have a large turnout on Tuesday. If we do, the politicians just might listen to our needs concerning healthcare, education, immigration, infrastructure, the economy, our veterans and senior citizens, and more. They are all affected by our votes. So, let’s get out and vote for a better community and nation.

Veterans Day is a week from Saturday, November 11. City of Holly Springs is hosting an event, Friday, Nov. 10, at the Eddie Lee Smith Multi- Purpose Building. Dr. Darrell L. Williams, major U.S. Army (Retired) will be the speaker. A complimentary lunch and gift bag will be available for veterans. Call Eleanor C. Clayborn at 662-298-4723, extension 114, to reserve a seat for a veteran. Everyone is invited to attend.

We will honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. I’m sure many know someone who has served in the military. My father was a Navy veteran who served during the Korean War, and my uncles also served in the Navy. Let us not forget to honor our Veterans. They fought for the freedoms we have today.

Last but not least, the last holiday in November is Thanksgiving. Some people call it Turkey Day. The planning begins several weeks before, and budgeting will be a process this year since groceries are higher.

My family usually gets together, and we all have our favorite dishes that we bring. When we had it at my parent’s home, mother used to get out her fine china and work up a seating chart. If all the family came for Thanksgiving, we would seat about 40+ people.

My mother always had each table beautifully set.

When my daughter was in elementary school, I always enjoyed seeing all the artwork she would bring home before Thanksgiving and it never failed; there was always a Pilgrim dress-up day. The day after Thanksgiving has always been when my daughter and I go and pick out a Christmas tree. Shells Christmas Tree Farm on Hawk Pride Mountain in Tuscumbia, AL., is where she likes to go to pick and cut her tree. My dad and I used to get the family Christmas tree there every year until he was 88. Picking out the Christmas tree has always been one of our favorite things to do the day after Thanksgiving.

Remember to move your clocks back on Saturday, go Tuesday to vote for your favorite candidate, make plans to honor the Veterans, and last but not least, get ready for Thanksgiving.
