Navigating through winter weather

It seems winter is not going to skip us this season. I pray for everyone’s safety as we navigate through this weather. Also, let’s pray for those who have no choice but to be outside in the elements.

I worked 40 years for a company that expected us to be at work no matter what. I remember missing three days in that time frame due to the weather. Once, a live wire was down on a tree, drooping on my driveway with no way around it. Another time, I was at Baptist Central Hospital, watching out the window as folks tried to drive in several inches of snow. The last time I dealt with driving on snow and ice was when I had gone out of town with a friend to a funeral, and we were stranded in an unexpected snowstorm.

Most years, I drove myself and even picked up coworkers on the way when snow covered the roads. Other times, I rode with coworkers who had vehicles better equipped for such driving. There were times when Doug and I could ride together since he worked at the same place.

My little dog, Charlie, who is five years old and has seen snow before, has refused to go out to potty. He reached the bottom of the steps, walked a step or two, and returned inside. We have tried several times since then, and he has not even made it down the steps. Sooner or later, he will have to make that trip.

The election date for the new mayor of Byhalia has been changed to February 20. The two candidates who have announced their candidacy are Donald Hollingsworth and Daylon Cannon. I have heard there are others, but to my knowledge, no paperwork has been submitted. To be eligible to run you must have lived within the town limits for two years and collect fifty signatures of registered voters who live within the town limits. This election is important to the future of the town of Byhalia.

It’s time for spring and summer baseball and softball registration in Marshall County. It is so necessary for players to register early in the year to allow for team formation, soliciting coaches, obtaining sponsors, ordering uniforms, scheduling, and beginning practice as soon as the weather allows. I don’t have a lot of information for you. Byhalia is currently seeking a Parks and Rec Director. Holly Springs hasn’t communicated any information to me. Potts Camp Sports Association won’t know if they will be able to use the fields at the park until a meeting with the Potts Camp Board of Alderman in early February. If you are interested in your child playing tee ball, baseball, or softball in Marshall County this season, you should call the town where you want your child to play and inquire what their plans are.

Surrounding communities are having signups, and most will end on February 1.

This year, the Marshall County League will celebrate 20 years of furnishing this program for the youth of the county. Marshall County Sports Association will be meeting soon to discuss plans for the season.

Although not a Byhalia native, Patrick McGee is currently a proud Byhalia resident. Not only does he create very beautiful artwork, but he also is an extremely talented musician. Come out and spend some time “Painting With Patrick.” He will demonstrate the creative process of one of his paintings from start to finish at the Ruth B. French Library, Thursday, January 25, at 4 p.m.
