Remembering Sept. 11, 2001

As I was driving to work Monday morning, I stopped at the red light at the corner of Highway 7 and College, and I saw the giant American Flag flying in the wind as it hung from the Holly Springs Fire Department’s ladder truck in memory of September 11, 2001. It brought back the memories of that tragic day.

Sept 11, 2001-When I stopped at the red light at the corner of Highway 72 and Cox Creek Parkway, I remember telling my daughter, Emily, what a beautiful morning it was in September 2001. The sun was bright and it was a clear, beautiful blue sky. I dropped Emily off at school at our usual time, 7:45 a.m. I turned my radio on as I drove off and heard the announcer talking about a plane that had just flown into one of the World Trade Centers in New York. I said a prayer for those on the plane and in the WTC. The announcer did not tell the audience what type of plane it was, but by the time I arrived, another had flown into Tower II, which was very clear it was a jetliner.

That day, 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes.

The first two flew into WTC Towers I and II, and the third plane flew into the United States Pentagon. The passengers revolted against the hijackers and caused the fourth plane to crash into a field in Shanksville, Penn.

The attack killed nearly 3,000 people.

Betty Scott came by the office Monday to say she was so glad the Holly Springs Fire Department chose to remember 9/11 by hanging the American flag. She also reminded me of the song written by American singer-songwriter Darryl Worley.

Have You Forgotten

I hear people saying we don't need this war
I say there's some things worth fighting for
What about our freedom and this piece of ground
We didn't get to keep 'em by backing down
They say we don't realize the mess we're getting in
Before you start your preaching
Let me ask you this my friend

Have you forgotten how it felt that day
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell
We had neighbors still inside
Going through a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten

They took all the footage off my TV
Said it's too disturbing for you and me
It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it everyday
Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right

Have you forgotten how it felt that day
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell
We had neighbors still inside
Going through a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout Bin Laden
Have you forgotten

I've been there with the soldiers
Who've gone away to war
And you can bet that they remember
Just what they're fighting for

Have you forgotten all the people killed
Some went down like heros in that Pennsylvania field
Have you forgotten about our Pentagon
All the loved ones that we lost
And those left to carry on
Don't you tell me not to worry about Bin Laden
Have you forgotten

Have you forgotten
Have you forgotten
