Renovations underway at Wall Doxey State Park

A lot of renovations and hard work is happening at Wall Doxey State Park on Highway 7 South, according to Park Manager Lordish Matheney.

“We have plans to open the swimming area, concessions store and a camp store in the near future,” Matheney said. “Our cabins will renovated, too.”

Matheney has been the park manager since 2020, there has not been any swimming or concessions since she has managed the park.

“The swimming area has not been available for many years, but we hope to open it soon,” she said.

“We have camping, fishing, disc golf, hiking/nature trails, picnic shelters, an event center and cabins available in the park,” Matheney said.

The beautiful historic park, built in 1938 and originally named Spring Lake State Park, is located seven miles south of Holly Springs and 24 miles north of Oxford on Highway 7. It has a beautiful 60-acre spring-fed lake for families to enjoy swimming and fishing.

“The park was one of the first eight built by the CCC (Civilian Conservations Corps),” Toney Fleming with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) said.

Fleming said the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team and MDWFP have started the cleanup.

“We have plans to repaint and clean up the swimming area and canteen area,” he said. “This is spring-fed park. It turns over water every 72 hours,” Fleming said.

The AmeriCorps team members came to the park for two weeks. The team helped revitalize areas needing attention.

“They pressure-washed areas, removed dead limbs, and cleaned walkways covered with grass,” Matheney said.

The park has 64 standard campsites and 17 primitive campsites. They also have cabins available.

“Wall Doxey State Park is a place where many people can camp, swim, fish, picnic, or walk the 2.5-mile hiking trail,” Matheney said. “The venue accomadates 150-200. It is an ideal place for a weekend getaway or vacation. We have a lot to offer,” Matheney said.
