Man/wife want burial on their land

Steve McGraw, now living in Oxford, appeared before the Marshall County Board of Supervisors at the Dec. 4, 2023, meeting seeking approval to be buried on private property.

He said he and his wife, who are now both 80, want to be buried on his land on Whisky Hill Road. He purchased the 42 acres in 1985.

Zoning administrator Ken Jones told supervisors the state requires one acre to be enclosed and fenced. The State of Mississippi has to approve the measure. The request has to go before the planning commission first for approval and then to the state.

The site plan must include a full acre filed with the deed should another party buy the property.

Board attorney Amanda Whaley Smith said she would help the McGraws get approval.

County engineer Larry Britt brought several matters before supervisors.

The board approved a permit request from Comcast to run an aerial fiber from pole to pole across the road on Bealle Meade Road.

Supervisors learned Britt is working with Jones and Justin Hall, executive director of the Marshall County Industrial Development Authority, to approve the paving of a road by CORE 5 in the industrial park. Britt said CORE 5 is paving the road and the county will take the road over after it is built.

Jones said once completed the road will carry a lot of traffic because there is a lot more construction to be done more construction to be done in the area.

District 5 supervisor Ronnie Joe Bennett asked if the county is recovering all usable material being removed from the Tippah River Bridge.

Britt said there were Choctaw spans removed from the bridge that went into the construction of the Battle Road bridge.

Bennett said there are 80foot steel beams the county can use. He wants the road and bridge department to move the beams to the county road department.

Britt suggested the beams could be cut in half before moving but Bennett insisted they not be cut to make hauling easier. He said the county can hire professionals to move the beams. A permit is required.

District 3 supervisor Keith Taylor said he is meeting with the town of Byhalia to get approval to create a bypass to relieve traffic off Highway 309 North in front of the Byhalia Schools campus.

He wants to create a bypass going from Bubba Taylor Road to Stonewall Road to divert traffic from the schools on 309 North.

He said he believes money can be obtained from the State of Mississippi to help with the project.

"The mayor (Debby Weathers, now resigned from office) was in favor of it and we need to get a plan done," he said.

He said Senator Neil Whaley and Rep. Bill Kinkade was to be in attendance at the board meeting on Dec. 19, 2023, to present the matter. Three school board members are also in favor of the bypass to ease bottleneck traffic at the school.

District 4 supervisor George Zinn III asked Britt for an update on the Tate/Marshall Road plans.

Britt said a plan has been presented to Sen. Lamar. The roadwork will be divided into three sections, a north and a south section and a section further south that is all located in Tate County.

Emergency management coordinator Leland Reed asked the board to sign off on the FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) COVID incident report as requested by the state. All monies expended by the county under this project must be accounted for and reported to the state.

Reed advised that a course is to be offered for elected officials who will be taught about the incident management system. The course, to be taught at the Marshall County Workforce Center, Feb. 22, is open to elected officials in the municipalities as well as county elected officials.

Reed requested the board purchase new office furnishings for the county building on J.M. Ash Drive. The old Medicaid office is being converted to new office space for the Zoning department and other county offices. The board approved a quote from Fairfield for $2,327 for the furniture.
