Qualifying continues for municipal elections
More candidates, since last week’s newspaper, have qualified to seek municipal positions in this year’s elections.
In Holly Springs, Bernita Fountain has qualified to seek the alderman Ward 1 position.
In Potts Camp, two incumbents have qualified – mayor Mary Houston and alderman Herbert Luther.
In Byhalia, no additional candidates have qualified since last week.
The deadline for qualifying is Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m.
Each candidate must be a qualified voter and resident of the city or ward for which he or she is seeking office.
The primary elections (if needed) will be held Tuesday, May 7, with a runoff date of Tuesday, May 21. Municipal general elections are set for Tuesday, June 4. The new four-year term for city elected officials will begin Monday, July 1.

Annual benefit set for Feb. 22 in Byhalia
The Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual Mardi Gras Party, to benefit Byhalia Beautiful and downtown projects, is Friday, Feb. 22, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Reach Adult Building, 73 Chase Street, Byhalia.
There will be music, dancing, “Taste of the Chamber,” and more. Cost is $20 per person with reservations. Contact the Chamber at 662-838-8127.
Area Job Fair less than two weeks away
The Marshall/Benton Area Job Fair is Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the McMillan Gymnasium on the Rust College Campus in Holly Springs.
Employers interested in a booth should contact the WIN Job Center, 662-252-7893.
Those seeking employment should dress to impress and bring a resume.
Byhalia police officers respond to 36 calls
The Byhalia Police Department responded to 36 calls during the past week.
Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2; miscellaneous, 9; escorts, 5; juveniles, 1; thefts, 1; disturbances, 2; assists, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 4; fires, 1; medical, 9; and DUIs, 1.
Byhalia police officers also made three arrests during the past week.
