Rodgers scores 20 in MC win
Senior guard Traci Rodgers tied a season-high with 20 points as the Mississippi College women’s basketball team pulled away for a 68-54 win at East Texas Baptist on Thursday night in Ornelas Gymnasium.
The Lady Choctaws (11-7, 8-4 ASC) scored seven unanswered points to end the first half and took a 33-19 lead into the break. To open the second half, Rodgers nailed a jumper and gave MC at 16-point advantage, their largest lead of the game.
Rodgers, a 2009 graduate of Marshall Academy, was eight of 10 from the floor and a perfect three for three from the three-point line as she tied her season-high in points. Her seven steals tied a single-game high this season as senior Valeri Stewart had seven steals against Concordia Texas.
The Lady Tigers (11-7, 6-6 ASC) proceeded to go on a 16-3 run and cut the lead to just 38-35 on a three-pointer by Jaimi Kadlecek with 15:24 remaining in the game. Kadlecek led all scorers with 21 points.
MC would take control from there as their defense stepped up the rest of the way, coming away with a season-high 22 steals, led by Rodgers with seven swipes.
Senior Caitlin Brown made a layup with 8:13 remaining that put MC ahead 58-47, and they never let ETBU get back within single digits. Brown had 10 points and six rebounds for MC.
The Lady Choctaws had 19 assists on 29 baskets, led by senior Ebony Williams with four helpers.
