Qualifying continues for municipal elections
More candidates, since last week’s newspaper, have qualified to seek municipal positions in this year’s elections.
In Holly Springs, Christy Owens has signed up to run for alderman Ward 4 and Mark Miller has qualified to seek the alderman Ward 3 position.
In Byhalia, incumbent Mike Hamblin has qualified to run for alderman.
No one has signed up to run for municipal races yet in Potts Camp.
The deadline for qualifying is Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m.
Each candidate must be a qualified voter and resident of the city or ward for which he or she is seeking office.
The primary elections (if needed) will be held Tuesday, May 7, with a runoff date of Tuesday, May 21.
Municipal general elections are set for Tuesday, June 4.
The new four-year term for city elected officials will begin Monday, July 1.

Arbor Day ceremony February 8 in Byhalia
The Byhalia Garden Club invites everyone to an Arbor Day tree planting at the Byhalia Sports Association fields on Edwards Road, Byhalia, Friday, Feb. 8, at 10:30 a.m.
A reception will be held at the Byhalia United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall immediately following.
If the weather does not allow, all will be rescheduled.
Hours change Feb. 1 at Potts Camp Library
In a January 22 meeting, the Marshall County Library Board of Trustees decided to change the hours of the Potts Camp Library.
Starting February 1, the library will be open 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and closed Wednesday.
Byhalia police officers respond to 31 calls
The Byhalia Police Department responded to 31 calls during the past week.
Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3; miscellaneous, 9; escorts, 5; disturbances, 1; motor vehicle accidents, 3; fires, 1; medical, 8; and harassment, 1.
Byhalia police officers also made five arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney.
