sport in county schools
Marshall County had its first archery meet between the county schools Monday, March 25.
Schools involved were Byhalia, H.W. Byers and Potts Camp. The shoot was held in the Byhalia High School gymnasium.
This is Byhalia’s second year to offer archery, and it is the first year for both Potts Camp and H.W. Byers.
The Byhalia coach is Bubba Brown. Potts Camp is coached by Mark Boyer. Byers coaches are Fred Holland and Colet Pierce.
Archery was started in the schools with help from a grant from Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks funding. Danny Mills was instrumental in helping get the programs kicked off.
Archery’s safety record is outstanding. It is almost unheard of for a person to be injured or to injure another person while shooting a bow and arrow. National organizations, which keep safety data, rate archery safer than every ball sport except table tennis.
Archery is a sport in which people from all walks of life can compete and be successful. It does not matter about physical ability; anyone can compete. Many boys and girls enjoy the thrill of archery success. Many realize that with proper instruction, practice and a positive attitude they can accomplish many things in life.
The archery team consists of 24 shooters from each school. All 24 participate and the highest 12 scores are added to get the team score – each 12 must consist of at least four girls.
Byhalia had the top team score of 2,999 in the recent match.
The highest-scoring girl and boy, respectively, for Byhalia were Shelby Dalton with a 265 and Austin Wilson with a 274.
Potts Camp had a team score of 2,884.
Potts Camp’s highest-scoring girl and boy, respectively, were Shauna Haney with a 241 and Aaron Glover with a 262.
H.W. Byers had a team score of 1,583.
The highest-scoring girl and boy, respectively, for H.W. Byers were Alayna McClure with a 226 and Jared Hopper with a 221.
